We had the good fortune of connecting with Jess Feaster and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jess, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
In 2015, our twin sons were 4 years old and for some reason we thought that would be a great time to start our own business! Thankfully, the Denver real estate market took off within a handful of years so our timing turned out very well in the long run. Jay and I are work hard/play hard people and we wanted to develop something of our own while gaining more flexibility and autonomy in our schedules. At the time, Jay had been a real estate agent for 6 years and I had been in marketing since college. Jay had the knowledge and motivation to help clients buy, sell and build homes while I used my past experience to develop the brand, website and strategy for finding and retaining new home buyers and sellers. When we hire employees, we have the same mentality – divvy up the responsibilities by playing to everyone’s strengths.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

Jay and I not only help people buy and sell homes, we also invest in real estate development ourselves and help others do the same. People often ask about Jay and I’s risk tolerance. We think about risk pretty differently and that’s been key for our success. Jay’s always milling over new ideas; it could be a new business venture or a new gadget to solve a day-to-day problem. His risk tolerance is high and he has a natural tendency to see the positive potential in new projects. I, on the other hand, can feel my heart beat faster anytime Jay brings me big, new ideas and I tend to picture many of the things that could go wrong. Jay has pushed me to take risks I never would have on my own while I have brought a balance to his grandiose ideas. This balance has allowed us to push the boundaries, but only to the point where we don’t bet the farm.

A key part of our story is how Jay and I met. We started our adventure together when we met as whitewater rafting guides in Canon City, CO in 2005. We literally lived in a van down by the river (technically it was a small trailer but close enough! ;-). Jay and I have been living and working together for most of the time we’ve known each other. While working with your partner of course has its moments, we really do compliment each other’s strengths and feel very grateful for the business and family we’ve created together. Plus, now we have a mutual passion for spending time with friends and family on a gorgeous river.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Downtown Historic Golden – our hometown! We’d take them for brunch at Abejas, followed by a stroll along Clear Creek (or tube it, depending on their appetite for adventure), followed by local beers and a food truck dinner with a mountain backdrop at New Terrain Brewery or Holidaily Brewing Co.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Dad, John Hazen. As a kid, I watched him grow his business, build an office building and eventually sell all of it to live the great life he and my mom live today. Now that my husband, Jay, and I have our own business, we often call him when we need some advice on long term strategy, employees and everything else that comes up as a small business owner. His words of wisdom are priceless for us as we continue to learn along the way.
