We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Roberts and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The choice to begin Logos Healing Institute came from a realization that nature-based trauma therapy that specializes in helping individuals who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation or human trafficking was non-existent. In working in the field of mental health, it was evident that more trauma specific services were needed for this population. We both have personally experienced healing and transformation in intentional wilderness experiences and witnessed how effective this environment could be as a container for healing. We dreamed of bringing this combination of intentionality in the wilderness with clinical trauma therapy to survivors of trauma, of which there is little access.
What should our readers know about your business?
Logos Healing Institute is a 501 (c)3 non-profit with the vision of a future where every person with trauma receives healing. We move towards this vision in three ways. The first by providing access to effective trauma therapy for individuals locally and nationally. We do this through weekly individual and group therapy as well as through our seasonal nature-based trauma therapy intensives. The second way is through our Catalyst clinical mental health professional training program. This program provides developing professionals with the knowledge and skills to effectively walk alongside individuals with trauma, including those with more complex experiences of trauma. The third way we move toward our vision is by providing trauma-informed training for organizations working with vulnerable populations.
We started Logos Healing Institute as Logos Wilderness Therapy but quickly saw that there was an opportunity and need to equip more professionals to walk alongside survivors in a way that research was demonstrating to be highly effective. We also chose to shift the direction of Logos because of feeling an imbalance of doing the direct work with individuals, which we are most passionate about, and the additional responsibilities of running an organization. This shift organizationally was both challenging and exciting. It required us, as co-founders, to give away power of decision making to individuals who were more equipped and knowledgable in our areas of weakness and also gave us the freedom to step more fully into what we, as leaders and clinicians, do really well.
Two of the many lessons we have learned along the way is the humility to adapt and that staying authentic and true to our values is essential to our success and our sustainability.
We would like the world to know that the heart of Logos is for healing and that every individual matters.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Though Golden is technically out of the city, it’s close to Denver but feels like your in the mountains. There are so many spots to grab a great cup of coffee, my favorite being Bean Fosters, go for a hike, walk along the river, go mountain biking or go rock climbing.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We are full of gratitude for our Board of Directors and multiple advisors and mentors along the way. They have all been continually celebratory of us as individuals and our organization. They have provided encouragement, solidarity, wisdom, and deep belief in both us and that our vision and mission is worthwhile and important in the world.
