We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Sumsky and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve been in the esthetics industry for 2 years now but have been a client myself of all sorts of beauty services since I was in middle school. Throughout my time as a client and in the industry, I felt as though there had always been a misconception where this industry is stuffy, only for the luxurious, and/or people feeling as though they don’t deserve to pamper themselves. My thought process and priority behind starting JLSkinCo was and always will be to strip the intimidation that comes with this field and make every client walking through my doors feel welcome, supported, and that I have their genuine best interest at heart when it comes to their skin and beauty wants and needs. While I will never tell someone they NEED to indulge because everyone is beautiful just the way they are, it is my mission to support those wanting to treat themselves in this way. Beauty and wellness goes so much deeper than physical appearance, it truly changes you from the inside out and everyone deserves to feel amazing in that way!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Throughout my time in esthetics, it has always been a priority of mine to remain genuine, inviting, and be a safe space for someone going through the motions of their skin/beauty journey. With this priority in mind, I have always felt so proud and lucky to help and support men and women finding their way to confidence and I am thrilled to be able to continue doing this in an even larger capacity with my own esthetic business.
Getting to where I am today with my business and my vision for where my passions lie in this field was definitely my own journey all in itself. I have worked in my fair share of esthetic environments from med spas to wellness facilities and in between. I found that throughout my time in these different environments I was able to truly find through the different positions I held, different services I offered, different places/states I worked in what aspects of this field fulfill me. In figuring this out, I was able to take all of what I learned about myself and the skills/knowledge of this field and bring that into my own business. There were ups and downs just as any journey takes; however, without my experiences prior to opening JLSkinCo, I wouldn’t be the Esthetician that I am today and for that, I am grateful to have had those experiences.
All in all, I want JLSkinCo to embody not only the services that I offer but also the support system and safe space that my clients always have walking through my doors. Everyone is welcome and everyone is deserving.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting me in Colorado, I would be so excited to share with them first and foremost my space and the girls/businesses I share it with! Now, with that being said I do live in the RiNo area so this trip would be a mix of showing them around Erie and Denver. I haven’t lived in Colorado that long but have made a list of a few memorable places I have visited thus far! Spending a couple of days in different parts of the mountains/trails would be a must like hiking Parmalee Trail. I have a lot of friends who love live music so I would love to also take them to Red Rocks for a visit or even a concert if the timing lined up. Another activity I would plan would be visiting the parks like Wash Park or Cheesman Park and doing picnics/relaxing! As far as eating/drinking there are breweries like BrewDog and Great Divide Brewing Co that would be great to go to and places like the Denver Central Market or Edgewater Marketplace that offer a great time and a lot of variety!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My friends and family have been my rocks in this process and I could not have started this without their support! However, I have to give a huge thank you to the team I share a space with, By Lex&Lu! Lexi Carlson and Luci Suiter own the spray tanning and permanent jewelry business in the same store front as my suite and have helped me navigate the ins and outs of starting this business. They have been a huge support system for me in this and I seriously cannot thank them enough! Overall, I really feel so lucky and blessed to have the love and support from so many people in my life and without them, my business would have never stepped foot off the ground!
