We had the good fortune of connecting with Jim Brewer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jim, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I grew up in Rogers, Arkansas, an area that has grown dramatically over the last 30 years. When I was growing up, Rogers (and all of northwest Arkansas) was rural. The people were down-to-earth, hard working small town folks. My father was a mailman and my mother was a housewife. They instilled in me the values I hold most dear . . . tell the truth, treat others with respect and don’t take shortcuts.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For 40 years, I worked in higher education administration at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. I started as sports information director, director of information, and student publications advisor. I later became director of communications in charge of all public relations, advertising, publications, photography and videography for the campus. Having so much responsibility allowed me to grow as a writer, photographer and publications designer. There were times when dealing with the wide range of communications needs on a college campus seemed overwhelming, but I always thought back to the old adage . . . How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!

I would hope that the people I worked for and with will always remember that I never settled for doing anything halfway.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art would be a must see in Bentonville.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout would have to go to my late parents, who were always there for me and served as examples for how I should live my life.
