We had the good fortune of connecting with Joanna Steidle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joanna, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I believe discipline and adaptability are the most important factors to my success. I fly drones almost every day, sometimes for my art, content creation or just for practice. I wake up very early and devote 3-4 hours a day to promoting and marketing my work. The drone industry is rapidly changing, and I am keen to step outside the box and often evaluate what is working well and what is not helpful in my success. Seeing a need or desire and fulfilling it to my best ability is always satisfying.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I am a drone artist and creator based in the Hamptons, on Long Island, New York. I have a strong focus on marine life aerial photography and videography.

2023 has been my most successful year to date and began with being honored as a Global Woman to Watch 2022 by Women and Drones, then published in Reporters without Borders 100 Photos from Around the World. In the summer months both me and my shark footage was featured on National Geographic and BBC. I received three Siena Drone Photography Awards this year. I also was the photography winner at the California Drone Film Festival 2023 and Arizona Drone Film Festival 2023. To top it off I had two magazine covers, Dan’s Papers and Hamptons Social.

It hasn’t been easy, I’ve crashed (pun intended) multiple times, Not much gets me down though, I just brush myself off and get back up and work harder. I set goals every year and prioritize my time.

I hope to bring the world a different perspective, which inadvertently opens minds. This in turn creates a greater love for our landscape and oceans.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

I am based out of Southampton, NY where we are surrounded by the beauty of nature. The first stop in the morning would be for a famous New York bagel, then right to the nearest ocean beach. We’ll fly the ocean searching to capture whales, sharks, tuna, rays, and fish from our drones. Then take a nice swim in the salty Atlantic Ocean.

A visit to the historical Village of Sag Harbor to check out the architecture, shops and massive yachts is always relaxing and interesting. Perhaps we would hop on a friend’s boat for a water cruise, tubing, or water skiing.

Then watch the sunsets from North Sea or Meadow Lane.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

My father raised me to believe I could do anything I put my mind to and if I found my passion I’d never have to work a day in my life. He’s been there through the good times and bad times with unwavering and unconditional love. I am who I am today because of his positive influence in my life.

My apologies for the sloppy writing, it is not my strong suit. I appreciate your time and efforts.
