We had the good fortune of connecting with Joannah Castro and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joannah, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
I believe that when it comes to the film industry, people think it’s just about picking up a camera, pressing record and… that’s it. But it’s more intricate than that. With being a videographer, you have to pay attention to detail, even the little things that may seem trivial or minute. It can be very frustrating, especially when you have a vision in mind and it takes several attempts to get “the perfect shot” that you are envisioning. Then comes to editing.. I’m a one woman show, so I do the filming and editing all by myself and there are times that I stress over not getting enough b-roll or kicking myself for not getting a shot at a certain angle. It’s far more complicated than “just picking up a camera.”
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In truth, I’ve always dreamt of working on set with a company as big as Warner Brothers, or living in LA and working on big scale productions. When I graduated from film school, I jumped right into job searches for exactly that. But I wasn’t getting anywhere with it. I decided to just do my own thing and do what I call Model Filmbooks for local models in Las Vegas. I did a couple but it didn’t really gain momentum as I was going through a break up. I decided to leave Vegas all together and come to Denver where I created Dark Gift Productions. I’m still attempting to launch my website and to get the company itself up and off the ground and get more video shoots under my belt. I have had the honor and opportunity to work with a local bridal company called Bete Noire, but my ultimate dream is to own my own studio, do boudoir video shoots or create more Model Film Books and maybe film a few weddings for Bete Noire clients.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Funny you should ask. My best friend is coming for five days in a couple of weeks! I intend to bring him to all of my favorite places that I’ve discovered here in the year of living in Denver. I am going to take him to my all time favorite restaurants which are Uchi, Hop Alley, and Linger. I also want to take him to some rad bars like William & Grahams, Union Lodge no 1, and B&GC. We are also going to check out Ritualcrvft, Horrid Mag, Crossroads, and Brass Armadillo. The thing is, there is so much to do in Denver! The possibilities are endless.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think the one person that played the biggest role in my journey is my best friend, Aris. While I was in film school getting my bachelors degree amidst working full time as a general manager for a restaurant, he continued to encourage me, helped me with my homework, and even got me a drone and assisted in a few shoots. He even helped me move to Denver and continues to hype me up from afar.
