We had the good fortune of connecting with Jocelyn Verano and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jocelyn, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
When deciding to select a major in college I was struggling to decide if I was interested in pursuing a career as an artist or a therapist. I chose a career in Interior Design as it seemed to be a good balance of both. I love working in residential Interior Design because I enjoy listening to my clients and creating beautiful spaces that are reflections of them as individuals and families. I consider it such an honor to be a part of such a personal experience and I love the enrichment that beautiful, well-functioning spaces bring to your home and life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I am one of the lucky people that truly love what we do. I love creating beautiful, functional spaces that are a reflection of our clients. I enjoy working with homeowners and seeing their visions come to fruition, and the pleasant surprise when you suggest a solution that resolves a problem or was unexpected. I enjoy creating memory points where clients are excited to talk about their beautiful space and share it with others. At Ellis Design Studio we are committed to utilizing our expertise, creativity, and experience to make the design, remodeling and building process fun and easy for our clients and building partners. The highest compliment that we can receive when we have completed a project is to hear about how easy the process was, and how much they love their space.

I think that sometimes people underestimate the power of great interior design in a space and how it affects you emotionally and physically. After a long day everyone wants to come back to relax in a home that feels well balanced and personally designed for you and your family.

I am lucky enough to be in the position that I am in today through the mentorship of others. I cannot begin to share how grateful I am for the incredible support system that I have had throughout my career. Through my mentors I have learned that perseverance far outweighs the quick and easy solution. Often a problem can be solved by pushing for the best solution not the easiest solution. I have found this to be true for myself personally and professionally, as well as in designs for my clients. What is exciting about this career is that every day is different, and each project presents new opportunities to solve problems in a beautiful way.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

I would recommend spending a summer day paddle boarding at the Chatfield Gravel Pond, and then heading over to Angelo’s Taverna for wine and pasta, or Breckenridge Brewery for a beer afterward. I would also suggest driving down to Pikes Peak to see one of the most beautiful views in the world! If you have time for a quick hike I would recommend a trip out to St. Mary’s Glacier, and then to return to the Highlands to El Five for incredibly tapas and views of the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

I have been so lucky to have had an incredible amount of influence from mentors in my life. I would consider mentorship, and sharing your wealth of knowledge and network with others to be the most important thing that we can do to enrich the professional and personal development of others around you.

I have had so many people to be thankful for in this industry and in my life. I love my job, and actually ended up working for one of my mentors in the industry, Diana Ellis, Owner of Ellis Design Studio several years after we completed our formal mentorship program together. Through working with Diana, I have learned so much about working with integrity, kindness, creativity, and problem solving. I would also like to thank Cheryl Schuette for her wisdom and direction for all of my professional career. Lastly, but never least I am so thankful for the support, mentorship and encouragement from my amazing husband, Nash Verano.

Because of the incredible mentors that I have benefited from being exposed to and sharing time with throughout my career I have volunteered on the Home Builders Association of Metro Denver’s Mentorship Committee for the past three years and have served as Mentorship Committee Chair this year through the Professional Women in Building Council. It has been a true honor to assist others with growing their network and enriching their professional development through this formal mentorship program within the HBA Metro Denver.
