We had the good fortune of connecting with Joe Bauer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joe, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Ever since back in college when I realized through exercise and sports that failure could be the fastest way to success, I’ve been open to taking risks for things that I’d like to accomplish.

There’s a motto that I try to live by… “if you aren’t falling, then you aren’t learning”. This is something my father in-law applied to every ski day we ever had together. And I fell a lot!

The way that I make risks easier to stomach comes from something I learned from the 4-Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss. You start by writing down your goals, or what you’re trying to accomplish. Then you write down the worst thing (or things) that could happen due to you trying to accomplish this goal.

I’ve used this strategy before starting a couple businesses, and what it usually comes down to is what would happen if I lost all my money. And I go through all the steps of how I would get back on my feet financially. Which almost always comes down to spending a month or two on the couch of family or friends and picking up a job to get the money flowing again.

When I go through the worst things that could happen… it’s pretty much always worth the risk.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business, The Get Better Project is designed is to teach people how to get into the best physical and mental shape of their lives, allowing them to easily perform all of the fun activities that the world has to offer, and all from the comfort of their own homes, with world class support and coaching along the way.

The thing that sets us apart is not the workouts, you can grab free workouts all over the internet. It’s not the nutrition plan, or macronutrient prescriptions. It’s that we actually care about you as a person! Each week our members complete a “weekly check-in”. This check-in not only covers your fitness and nutrition, but also your stress, sleep, energy, and several other things that can be barriers to you seeing success in fitness and life.

In fact, most times when people are having trouble losing weight, gaining muscle, or improving performance… it’s not only because of how hard they are working out, or what they are eating, it’s that they aren’t sleeping enough, or well enough, or they are stressed beyond belief.

We help and care for you as a whole person.

Finding business success for me has never been easy, but once I learned that my business had to revolve around my passion, then the work became more like play. Every day I get up and play, so if I’m working on getting more people into The Get Better Project, writing workouts, or talking with a member about how to maximize sleep… it’s all play, and I look forward to every second of it!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Alright, we are headed to Fruita CO! As we roll into town our first stop is Aspen Street Coffee for some delicious cold brew.

With coffee’s in hand, we are going to walk across the street to Over the Edge Sports to rent some high end mountain bikes and chat it up with some of the best bike mechanics in the business.

Once we’ve picked out some sweet bikes, we are rolling up to 18 Road for some hot laps around PBR and Joe’s Ridge.

After our lungs and legs are exhausted, we are headed back into town for some Peach Pizza at the Hot Tomato.

We will be heading back out to 18 Road for some camping and epic Colorado sunsets.

The week will continue with way more coffee at Aspen Street, sampling the mountain biking at Kokopelli and Lunch Loops, and more camping up at the Saddlehorn Campground with views of the National Monument. Amazing!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people, books, and podcasts that I could Shoutout here, but the biggest has been the support of my wife Emily who unconditionally is my partner in adventure and supportive of every crazy thing I want to do. I would also like to mention my best friend Erik Bee who is one of the best motivators I’ve ever met, and a successful businessman himself.

Lastly, the book 4-Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss really started it all for me. When I read that book I could hardly sleep for weeks. It took a while for my thick head to understand what I needed to do to make money the way I wanted to, but once I did it was magical!
