Meet Joey Childz | Hip Hop Artist/ Musician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Joey Childz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joey, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I never actually thought of it as a career, though it is. It’s always been more of an urge or an itch to scratch. I have been involved in music since I was a child so creating comes naturally. I really started to take it seriously, as a career, only a few years ago and for me, there’s no better rush than being on stage displaying your art for people.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I grew up listening to a certain standard of music early in my life. Because of that I try to use the blueprint that has already been laid and I build off that. Good music is undeniable. Doesn’t matter the genre. A good song is a good song. So I make music that feels good to me. I think that by sticking to what I believe in is what separates me from the field. There is nothing that drives my creativity more than me.

Everyday is an opportunity to learn something. Even when the outcome isn’t what you expect, there’s a lesson in that. I don’t allow my ego to get in the way of those lessons. For the past three years, I’ve been traveling all over the country, promoting the JC brand. I’ve come to realize that just like with a lot of the modern world, you can be easily scammed. All exposure isn’t good exposure. You have to be confident in your abilities and your product and know when to say NO. NOTHING IS MORE VALUABLE THAN YOUR TIME AND YOUR HEALTH. Do not allow anyone to waste either. The only person who is gonna care about you is you.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m huge on museums and wildlife. Here in Chicago we have countless museums, two zoos, an aquarium and bird sanctuary. I would definitely take a day or two to visit a few. I love shopping, unfortunately, so a visit downtown to walk around and see the different shops would be in the works.
There’s so many clubs and night time rooftop locations in city there’s no telling where you’ll end up. As long as you got money for parking.

For food, my favorite place to go anytime, every time, BUFFALO JOE’S. only two of these exist and it’s hands down THE best hot wings you will ever eat ( and I’ve been a lot of places and tried the wings). Plenty of deep dish pizza but if you’re looking for a regular slice JB Albertos is never a bad choice.

Depending on the time of year, catching a Sox, Bulls, or Bears game is always good fun. Especially baseball. Less likely to be freezing.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First, I HAVE to thank God. Although it may seem cliche, honestly, sometimes I don’t know how I come up with some of these concepts and ideas.

Second, I wanna thank my family. I have a very large family but we are all very close. I’ve been blessed to have a long list of Aunties, Uncles, and Cousins that have all passed down invaluable information and life experiences for me to grow and learn. That being said I’d like to thank my city as well (Chicago) for MY life experiences which helped to mold me as well.

The military for teaching me discipline and showing me the world. I’m grateful for being able to get outside my bubble and being uncomfortable. The experiences I have from the military and the brotherhood I gained is unmatched to this day.

Lastly, I would like to thank my wife, Sammy. She has been the single most supportive person and friend I’ve had since beginning this creative journey. The only person to snap photos, record memories, book sessions, and keep me grounded. I don’t know if I’d be where I am today with all she does for me and the brand.
