We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonathan Beers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jonathan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Well I’ll be honest. I’m pretty new to the whole running my own business thing if I’m being honest. I’ve been doing photography since I was about five years old. But recently I did a wedding for some close friends that insisted I take the photos for their wedding. I did warn them that I was not a wedding photographer, that I did landscapes, but they said that’s why they choose me. They really enjoyed my work and thought that I was the best choice. After that I got the urge to get back into the saddle and start my own photography company taking photos for just about anything. I figured why not do something I loved and have fun with it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a photographer by nature. I’ve been taking photos off and on for as long as I can remember. I think what truly sets me apart from others is I dip my toes in all aspects of photography. I do landscapes mainly but now I also doe weddings, headshots, family portraits, events. I use mainly digital cameras but I also use film. I got into film when I was in Highschool and got hooked immediately. I believe I’m most proud of the fact that I’m entirely self taught. Everything I have done has been through my own curiosity and intuition. Well I’m just starting out on my professional path I’m only a couple months in and just trying to build clientele. But I finally decided to follow my passion and see where it takes me. So far it has not been an easy journey getting to where I am. Honestly I find myself lost at times. This is something I do on the side in my own time. I actually work three jobs, one full time and two part time. So any free time I have goes towards my photography. I take time to set aside all my projects and just get lost in nature to take care of myself so that I can conquer any challenges in my way. Honestly all I want people to know about my brand and story is that I keep one simple phrase in my mind at all times. Words my father said to me growing up “If you love what you do, you’ll find a way!”
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ha! I’m an explorer by nature so this is an easy one for me! Places I’d take a friend in Salt Lake City, first things first FOOD! The first stop would be Proper Burger their burgers are some of the best in the state! For drinks it would have to be my favorite watering hole the Beer Bar, their large selection of craft beer near and far is unbeatable, not to mention but their food is also pretty good as well. But the atmosphere is great, with all the sporting events on the TV’s and the welcoming and friendly staff, it’s just a great place to be. Now for sights, I would take them up Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons and hike up to twin/Catherine lakes in Brighton and even do a bit of climbing on Storm Mountain. I’d take them up to park city and show them around for the day check out Main Street and if your a local you know you have to make a stop at No Name bar on Main Street. Lastly I’d take them fly fishing on the Provo River and then hit any one of the several hot springs all over the greater Salt Lake Region. Now if it were winter that’s a different story! We’d be skiing all week of course all over. From Snowbird to Alta, Solitude and Brighton.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We’ll I can honestly say that I owe this all to my parents Henry and Suzanne. They pushed me from a young age to just take pictures of every little thing. From family moments to things that caught my interest. I remember actually as a young kid I was always running around at the family gatherings taking photos with my camera. Looking back at all of them you can clearly tell they were taken by a five year old haha. Up until recently I had been taking a a break from photography because I didn’t have any inspiration and felt quite lost. But slowly over the last year my mother had been really pushing me to get back into it, she kept telling me that I had a natural talent and eye for taking breathtaking photos of the landscape that constantly surrounds me weather it was in the Florida Keys, or where I currently live now in Salt Lake City which makes it pretty easy to get great content for my professional page.
