We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordin Hageman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jordin, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
Your gut will tell you and if it doesn’t, the universe or whatever higher power you believe in will. You push and push, do everything in your power to advance and persevere until you know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that there is no more you could’ve done to be successful and if after all of those things, its still not igniting your passion- it’s okay to set it down. That goes for anything- career choice, hobby, relationships.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a professional cake artist, specializing in wedding and celebration cakes. I always stammer my way through the “what sets you apart?” question. Yes, my cakes are tasty and I do a great job decorating. I respond in a timely manner, I’m friendly and my pricing is fair. But this day in the social media age, especially being in a big city like Denver, none of those things set me apart from the hundred other decorators within a 20-mile radius. Maybe what sets me apart is my self-awareness that I’m really not set apart. I am more talented than some in the world, less talented than others. I am a humble home-baker, trying to break through the algorithms, thinking that maybe the reason I’m successful is less to do with me being the best of the best, and more about me being a cool person that you got along with and trust to do right by your powdered sugar dreams.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I were a Denver tour guide in another life, I would first usher you through all of the best Mexican restaurants. Regardless of the time of day. Green chili for breakfast, lunch and dinner. El Tejado, Santiagos, Don Juans, Chubbys. Then my tour group would likely need a nap, but after that, we would head to the mountains. Pick a ski town, doesn’t matter. If it has a taffy shop and a trinket shop right next to each other on a quaint little main street- it’ll do. Somewhere in this trip (thats already probably up to several days long at this point), I’d usher my group downtown. Sight see the stadiums, 16th street mall, Robot Mike (is Robot Mike still there?). If anyone is still willing to follow me around, I guess we would have to end the tour at one of the reservoirs. I guess we could’ve hiked, but I don’t hike so they’d be on their own for that.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My success is owed to so many, many people. The interest in this career began with my daughter, was supported by my parents, celebrated by my sister, friends, cousins, grandparents and in-laws, was given the physical and emotional tools to thrive by my husband and pushed to continue to keep perfecting by my son. I have some talent and a spatula, but these people are the glue holding all the rest of it together.

My glue: Dalila Rose, Sawyer Rain, Ryan, Grams, Mom, Dad, Nancy, Joe, Carrie, Kimberly, Peanut, Butter, Bethany, Madso. Love you all so much.
