We had the good fortune of connecting with Joseph Ferris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joseph, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have pursued an artistic and creative career because I need to in order for me to be a happy person. I’ve tried different types of jobs like Working at a nursing home, working in the mental health field, working construction. In every job I have found that if I don’t have the opportunity to grow and use my creative mind I quickly become depressed. For me creativity is less of a choice and more of a MUST. Just like a bird must fly, a fish must swim, a mosquito must wine, I must have the freedom to overcome obstacles, work hard and see the results of my work!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve done a lot of different art throughout my life but I’m focusing primarily on drawing caricatures for income these days. What sets my caricatures apart from others is that I pay extra attention to the features in my drawings looking like the actual person. Unfortunately I have seen many artists rush through their caricatures so fast that they end up drawing the same cartoon female or male no matter what person is posing in front of them. Though I try to do my art at a quick pace I don’t let the features of the drawing fall to the weigh side to expedite the drawing time. I started my caricatures as a side hustle and I’m currently a full time artist. I got to this point in my career by constantly promoting my work on facebook and instagram and taking on as many caricature gigs as I could manage. Business results in more business! I would like to be known as a caricature artist that shows up on time and does the best work he can. I want every person I draw to feel happy and that they have something they can take home and cherish.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My brother was a big influence in me pursuing a creative career. Growing up we always used our imaginations to make great stories and drawings. When we got older we definitely faced pressures to be less creative and GET WITH THE PROGRAM. I think if it weren’t for my brother’s influence I would be a more traditional thinker and probably would have been a better student! But my brother was good at bucking the system and doing his own creative thing and I believe I followed in his footsteps.
