We had the good fortune of connecting with Julia Duckworth and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started out working as a photographer under a few different companies but I always knew I wanted to be my own boss. I finally took the leap in 2022 to go full time into my photography business knowing that it would be a rough start but that I knew i could make it to the top. Once I got the ball rolling the clients started to find me and I have been grateful I took a chance on myself.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Growing up deaf you are forced to learn to take the world in differently than others. Instead of listening to the world and being distracted by its sounds I solely focused on it visual beauty and I learned to really appreciate every moment. I did recieve cochlear implants and can hear and speak and most people i meet wouldnt even guess i was deaf at all but i never forgot that experience growing up so, when I started photographer I used that experience to capture moments that I truly felt highlight a couples wedding. I always tell me couples that I “hear with my eyes” and that I’m going to make sure they remember their wedding day for years to come. I also believe in being a couples cheerleader and that no matter what they want or do on their wedding day I’m there to cheer, laugh, cry and dance with them all day long.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I believe in experiences and would love to show them the staples of Denver- Union Station, Red Rocks Park, take them to the best eateries like Sam’s Number Three, Bull and Bush, and Denver Biscuit Company just to name a few. Would love to them to the mountains after they have been acclimated to the elevation. Specifically Vail, since that is where I was born and worked at the resort for a couple of years. Depending on the season they’re here I’d love to take them either snowboarding or mountain biking. I’d love to show them around what makes this state so beautiful, even if we’re just driving around looking at all the sights- including Mt Blue Sky!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The first person I want to shout out is my Mom she has been my biggest supporter everyday and is someone who can lift my spirits no matter the occasion. I would also like to thank my husband who believed in me and encouraged me to start my own business and has been there every step of the way. Lastly i would like to highlight my friend and fellow photographer Makaila who has been with me through the good, the bad, and whatever life has to throw at us.
