Meet Julia Goldman | Steamboat Bagel Baroness

We had the good fortune of connecting with Julia Goldman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julia, what principle do you value most?
At the end of the day, I believe that doing the right thing is the most important principal. This involves communicating effectively with people and managing expectations—whether they are employees, customers, or vendors—and handling any situation with integrity and honesty. Specifically, I value consistency across all aspects of life and in business. This includes the quality of the food we produce, our actions, our behavior, and our communication.

What should our readers know about your business?
I bought the bagel shop in Steamboat Springs in 2018, and it has been here for 32 years now! I opened a second location in June 2024. We provide good quality, affordable food for our town and locals. Running restaurants is challenging and expanding is tough, but I’m not afraid of hard work. Great things come from hard work and perseverance. I’ve always loved making and eating sandwiches. Getting to share that love with so many people is a dream I didn’t know I had.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Skiing at the resort or Howelsen. Going tubing at Saddle Back Ranch and Strawberry Hot Springs in the winter! Floating the Yampa in the summer is very special. Going to Steamboat Lake and Stagecoach are beautiful areas to check out and can rent a boat. Love walking downtown and checking out smaller, local retailers (Upcountry, Urbane, Deja Vu, The Westerly, Off the Beaten Path, Adorn) and then grabbing lunch.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am grateful for my husband and our two exceptional children! We bought the bagel shop when I was seven months pregnant with my daughter, marking the year I became a wife, a mother, and a business owner all at once. Patience became a requirement during this time. In March 2020, I had my son. Starting a new business while adjusting to motherhood for the first time was as challenging as having another child as a global pandemic unfolded. My children learned to share me as their mom and showed remarkable understanding for their age regarding the demands of my work. I believe they will grow up to be compassionate, hardworking individuals who will also know the ins and outs of customer service!
