Meet Just Emcee: Rapper, beat maker, audio engineer, videographer, and visual artist.

We had the good fortune of connecting with Just Emcee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Just Emcee, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
I started WolffHouse Studio not only because I wanted to be a professional musician and videographer in my own right, but because it allowed me to focus on something I truly love. It gave me the opportunity to connect with other like-minded individuals, as well as help increase the number of people out here contributing to the art form that I love the most. When I was younger I had a few chances to connect with studios, performance spaces, and even radio and video production companies. To me those were always the coolest places. I want to contribute back to that community and inspire others who are yet to find media art and hip-hop culture. If my community is flourishing, my business has a better chance. So really, I just want to see Denver hip-hop thriving on a large scale.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to think I wear many hats. I’m a rapper, beat maker, audio engineer, videographer, and a visual artist. I focus most of my time on making music, primarily new hip-hop beats or rap songs. I have worked with a lot of different rappers and emcees over the years. I have collaborated with over 50 local and non-local artists. That list keeps growing too. I have worked for others doing mixing and mastering on their projects, making them beats, or as a rapper on top of other beat makers productions. I have also worked on short films, music videos, and even a few animations. I have also done album art and I even design hats and t-shirts. I have spent most of my life building these skills. I started playing musical instruments when I was in elementary school, and have been making videos since high school. In both video and music I have trained professionally for years. I actually graduated from film school with a degree in writing and directing for film and video. I can’t say it was easy to get where I am now, but for me the passion outweighed the obstacles. I think I bring something unique to the table compared to others. And while I have my hands in a lot of different realms, I also know exactly what I want to focus on. I do love most music, but I am only interested in making hip-hop. I don’t care if I am behind the mic, the camera, or the mixing boards. I just want to make good music and music videos. I think it’s a strength that when I am filming a rapper, I know how it feels to be a rapper speaking to a camera. I like to work with others who also have strong vision and take their art seriously. Luckily I live somewhere that has a lot of like-minded individuals.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It’s hard to totally define my favorite spots in the city, especially since the lockdowns started. One of my favorite spots was Alternation Brewing, but they unfortunately have since had to close down. We had monthly hip-hop shows there, and my favorite food trucks, like Vegan Van, were always parked out front. I look forward to things coming back together as things get better around the world. I live in the western part of Denver, closer to Lakewood, and one of my favorite things about living here is that you also have quick access to the mountains. It only takes 20 or so minutes to get to somewhere really beautiful. The best part of Denver and Colorado, in my opinion, is that even in the city there are so many parks, paths, and natural areas.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many people I would love to shoutout. I couldn’t be here without a lot of help. Of course my family, friends, teachers and peers along the way, even corporations I’ve worked for have shown me there is a lesson to learn from every encounter you have. There are a few that stand out, but as hip-hop is such a collaborative art form I can truly say nothing I do would be as important without the supporting community and friends I have around me. That said, my girlfriend (aka: Blackheart Creations) and my business partner (aka: ThatKidCourageous) are the two individuals that help me the most.
