We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As of September 17th, 2021, I am most proud of leading the team as Art Director of Meow Wolf’s Convergence Station. Over the span of 2+ years, a global pandemic, layoffs, and other struggles, I proudly led the art and design of Convergence Station from design to a successful opening. By no means was it easy. When we first started the design, the pandemic was not even a thought in our minds. Once that hit, we had to reevaluate much of the project, and navigate it through uncharted waters. We had to learn how to finish design from separate offices around the country, and bring the whole project together safely on-site as we charged towards our opening date. We overcame the challenges by working together as a team, being there for each other in such a hard and stressful time both at work and in our personal lives as we all learned to deal with the new world we live in. It takes a monumental effort to build such an industry rocking experience, and that no one person can do it all, so be there for each other. I would love for people to realize that nothing ever can be done by one solo person, that when you come together as a team, like a family, that you can build and create the most impressive and monumental projects when everyone is valued. Know that everyone on your team is there for a reason and they can provide something so special to your group. Lean on them, give them a seat at the table and they they will exceed your expectations.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Denver is filled with some of the most beautiful outdoor venues and experiences. So first go explore the mountains and the different trails that are offered. As a huge baseball fan myself, Coors is among the top stadiums in baseball, so don’t miss out on that or the National Ballpark Museum on Blake Street. Little Man Ice Cream is always a great way to end a long week and enjoy some time with friends and a good ice cream cone!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost my family deserves the biggest shoutout for the support structure to push me to go after my dreams. Without having them at the core of my pursuit, I wouldn’t have come as far as I have. They are always a phenomenal sounding board for when I need some honest feedback or second opinions. My girlfriend, Anne, for continuing to be there for me even when work takes me away from her for long periods of time, knowing that she is there and behind me on anything is so important and keeps me going. And finally, growing up I read “The Last Lecture” by Randy Pausch and watched the video numerous times, and used so many of the lessons to influence my decisions. The quote ” Brick walls are there for a reason, they are not there to keep you out. They are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something” has stuck with me for years now. The idea that while we all have goals and dreams, they are all achievable, it just depends on how badly you want to reach them.
