We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaimee Martelli and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kaimee, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
The amount of project management and organization that’s involved with kitchen and interior design. It’s really only about 60% creative work. The rest of the process is ordering product, managing timelines, customer service, and pricing and proposals.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My design and art are very homeowner oriented. I am a people person and love to get to know the families I work with which in turn drives the design. Questions might include how do you like to organize, who is the main cook, are you left or right-handed, and what colors make you happy. I really want the finished space to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
I’ve been in this profession for 23 years, so it’s been a long road to get to business owner. After graduating college with a BA in Interior Design, at my first job, I looked so young everyone would ask me if my dad owned the business, and if this was my after-school job. After that, I went to work for a cabinetry rep business in Minneapolis where I could really get to know cabinet construction and the nuts and bolts of the business. Then I moved to Denver and went into retail kitchen design, followed by working for a luxury design kitchen firm that worked largely with custom builders. And now, it felt like the right time to work for myself and create my own brand and how I want the kitchen design process to flow.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The trip would have to start at Snooze because every one of my friends wants to go back there when they visit. Then we would probably spend some time in Denver hitting up boutique shops, make a stop at Woodhouse Day Spa for some relaxing, and do dinner at Sushi Den. We would also spend a day exploring my neighborhood and going to the pool and a Rapids game if it’s summer. I am such an outdoors person that we would then spend the rest of the time in the mountains! It might be a trip to Granby for hiking and relaxing, followed up some SUP time at Grand Lake. Or heading to Keystone for skiing and chalet time in the winter. Or a longer road trip to Basalt and Aspen for hiking, biking, shopping, and dining.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family is so supportive and understanding of the extra time and work I’ve had to put in this year to start my business! And my core friends continue to encourage me and check in. And of course, my parents, who let me paint my room however I wanted and redecorate frequently as a kid.
