We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaitlin Bjork and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kaitlin, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Work life balance is so critical to being a healthy and well-rounded individual. It requires discipline to work hard and put in the necessary hours, but also to know when to step back, take a break, and fill your cup in other ways. I have always been a very hard worker. My parents instilled a strong work ethic in me early on as they led by example; putting in the long hours and showing up for your team to make sure you were successful.

However, I came to realize that focusing solely on work was only one piece of the puzzle. It’s easy to become so immersed in your work, causing other aspects of life to fade or lose their importance. The pandemic compelled me to spend more time at home with my children, revealing a personal challenge: I struggled with the idea of staying home, especially with my kids. Accustomed to long workdays while relying on others to care for my children, I found fulfillment and value in my work. However, this prolonged period at home showed me the necessity of achieving a more balanced approach to life. I knew I needed a new approach.

Nowadays, amidst my demanding work schedule, I prioritize moments for self-care, such as regular gym sessions, as well as cherished family time with my husband, kids, and loved ones. Though not without its challenges and disruptions, this evolving routine reflects my commitment to achieving a better balance.

Moreover, I advocate for this equilibrium within my team, recognizing that sustained success stems from a collective well-being. Encouraging my colleagues to prioritize a work-life balance fosters a healthier, happier, and more productive work environment for all of us.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I hold a lot of pride in being a second-generation native of Fort Collins, an incredible community that holds a special place in my heart. Both of my daughters were born here, further deepening our connection to this wonderful area. Over the years, I’ve witnessed Fort Collins undergo remarkable growth, and it’s been a privilege to be a part of it.

My journey led me to Colorado State University, where I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Management. During my time there, I had the honor of being a part of the Women’s Tennis Team, where I not only played, but also had the opportunity to share my passion for the sport as the assistant coach, alongside Jon Messick. I loved every minute of being a part of the CSU family!

After graduating, I pursued a career in the hospitality industry, starting with roles at hotel front desks before transitioning into catering and sales positions. After about 6 years of jumping around that industry, I came to a realization: while I appreciated the dynamic, and sometimes very interesting nature of hospitality, my true passion lay in serving people and contributing to the community that I love.

I found a position at a local marketing and communications company called Lightsource Creative Communications. The work and the people there helped me recognize the potential for meaningful work, right here in Fort Collins, my hometown! It was through the work with Lightsource that I learned about Respite Care and the incredible work that they do. I’ll never forget attending my first Respite Care Luncheon and crying through most of it because of how moved I was by the stories told by families the organization had served.

And, I’d love to end with “the rest was history!” But, there is still a lot of work to do to make sure that Respite Care is a part of our community for many years to come. It’s not just a service; it’s a lifeline for families in need, and I consider myself truly blessed to play a role in supporting and enriching the lives of those we serve, here in Northern Colorado!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This visit would definitely have to include a visit to Old Town Fort Collins! This has always been one of my favorite places, no matter what age. With the local restaurants, shops, fountain in the square, seasonal lights display, the list goes on! Coopersmith’s, for sure, has always been a favorite, and if the timing was right, we could stop by for one of their seasonal What-A-Melon beers!

Another stop would have to be up in the foothills for a hike, maybe Lory State Park, or Horsetooth Rock. I used to hike that all the time at night and loved it! Not sure why I thought it was a good idea to do it at night, but that was a regular activity for me growing up.

A round of golf at City Park Nine would be on the list! It’s a casual, fun course that’s great for any skill level.

Heading to a CSU sporting event is also a must. Basketball, volleyball, football, whatever is in season, they are all fun and a great way to support our community!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to the amazing community we have here in Northern Colorado that has supported Respite Care, Inc. for over 42 years!
