We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brandon, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
We are actually in our 3rd generation of family ownership. Our founder (my Grandfather), Richard Scott, started in the hair care industry in the 1960’s and that is when we entered the professional products market.

Until the early 1960s, all shampoos and bar soaps were alkaline type cleansers. They could not be used with frequency because they stripped the hair and scalp of their natural oils and moisture, causing the hair to become dry, brittle and uncontrollable. Simple combing and brushing would cause the hair to break and split. The scalp would itch and flake, creating conditions that were misdiagnosed as dandruff, when in reality we were seeing chemically burned epithelial tissue and soap curd.

Acidic shampoo was introduced as a means of countering the adversity of the alkalines. Rather than swelling, drying and hardening of the hair shaft, these new products would do just the opposite by softening and compacting the hair shaft. The differences were both immediate and remarkable. Consumers readily accepted this new technology and soon begin shampooing on a daily basis. This was truly the beginning of the personal hygiene practices we enjoy today.

Our scientists at Concept 7 agreed that it was time to discontinue the use of alkaline cleansers, but it posed a logical question: If we eliminate the cause of damage to our hair and skin, why do we need a treatment of any kind? Our hair goes through a process of shedding and regrowth as a normal function of our metabolism. If the new growth has never been subjected to alkalinity or acidity, it will continue to grow in its naturally intended state there is nothing to be fixed. Thus, we introduced Concept 7, Shampoo For Hair and body with a neutral pH 7.0.. It can cleanse the hair, scalp and body without depleting the normal lipid barrier of the hair and skin. It cannot swell, harden and dry as the alkalines do, or soften and compact as the acidics do. It’s simply cleanses the hair and body without compromising its natural integrity.

Formulating and manufacturing Neutral Concept, pH 7.0 products is still our guiding principle but we have expanded our expertise into skincare, nailcare and even a few amazing outdoor products. We also offer custom formulation and private label manufacturing services but in recent years our focus has shifted back towards bringing our line direct to the consumer.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Our Formulas are Different Out of Necessity

We develop, test and manufacture our products in the semi-arid atmosphere of our home base, Colorado, where the average humidity is 16% and the high-altitude sun is exceptionally intense. Our formulas are different out of necessity. We have all heard the comment from a newcomer to our area, that products they have used regularly just don’t seem to work here. Of course not! They weren’t designed to work here. Conversely our products that perform with excellence in Colorado, are found to perform exceptionally well in other climates.

The performance of our products can be attributed to our selection of the finest ingredients science and nature has to offer and for the masterful blending of those materials by our master formulator. You cannot haphazardly compound even the finest of ingredients, be they organic, natural or synthetic, and expect that compound to be of benefit when applied to your hair or skin. These ingredients must be housed in a delivery system that distributes each material systematically to perform its intended function. The ingredients are of no value unless they remain in contact with the hair or skin. Science tells us that the body carries a negative ionic charge, so we render each of our products cationic, having a positive ionic charge. Now, just as magnets are attracted to their opposite poles, our products are attached by ionic attraction.

All products contain a category of components called humectants. These materials help to keep products from freezing and from drying out, but their primary function is to attract water from the moisture rich atmosphere, providing supplemental moisture to the hair and skin. The most common are glycerin, propylene glycol and butylene glycol, all of which have a tremendous capacity for the absorption of water. The problem we have with any of these materials in our semi-arid atmosphere is that the most abundant source of water from which they will absorb is the skin itself. That moisture is then readily evaporated into our dry air. These materials will in fact become drying agents.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have had many friends visit from out of state over the years and each is into something different. Fortunately, Colorado has something to offer for everyone! Some friends are more into the outdoor scene so hiking or snowboarding are always cool options. I’m always sure to remind people that, the sun’s intensity increases by about 5% for every 1000 feet above sea level that we are, so sunscreen is mandatory here! Fortunately, we make RaSORB with Mos-QUIT-O which is a sunscreen lotion with natural mosquito repellant for those fun days outdoors.

For those friends that are into the city life, I like to take them to downtown Denver. Comedy Works is always an option. Maybe a Nuggets, Avalanche or Rockies game. So many amazing breweries here too. Wibby in Longmont is one of my favorites. Dry Dock in Aurora is another.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, to my Grandfather, Richard Scott. He founded our company and provided us with the vision to continue on with what he started.

To Alvin, my partner in this venture. He spent many years learning how to formulate from my Grandfather and we haven’t missed a beat!
