We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaitlin Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kaitlin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After leaving an abusive relationship, I knew I wanted to build a better life for myself—one where I had control over my future and didn’t have to work for someone else. KM Customs isn’t the first business I’ve started, but it became the one that truly reflects my passion. I’ve always loved creating personalized and custom items for friends and family, and turning that passion into a business felt like the right path. KM Customs was born from my desire for independence, creativity, and the ability to provide something meaningful to others while building a life on my own terms.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets KM Customs apart is that every step of the process—from design work to printing and creating apparel—is done entirely by me, ensuring high-quality, truly custom pieces with a personal touch. I got to where I am today through a relentless work ethic, passion, and a stubborn perseverance that refused to let me quit. My journey hasn’t been easy—I’ve faced challenge after challenge, and there have been plenty of moments spent crying on the floor, feeling completely defeated, before picking myself up and pushing forward. But every struggle has taught me just how strong of a woman I really am. Along the way, I’ve learned that honesty, transparency, and staying true to yourself are what truly transform a business. No matter how tough it gets, I refuse to give up on myself or KM Customs.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
While I’m definitely a bit of a workaholic and homebody, if a friend comes to town, I know how to take a break the right way. Our day would likely start with some margaritas—because priorities—before heading to Poudre Ponds with my two black German Shepherds. Watching them splash around while we soak up the sun is the perfect mix of relaxation and chaos. It’s a simple but solid way to enjoy the city while making sure both humans and pups get their fun in!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to the three people who have played the biggest roles in my journey—my mom, dad, and grandma. My mom was the definition of strength and independence, always pushing me to go after what I want in life. Rest in peace, Mom—I carry your lessons with me every day. My grandma is the one who sparked my love for crafting, and I cherish all the time we spent creating together. And my dad, a business owner himself, constantly challenges me with tough designs and pushes me to expand my skills, helping me grow in ways I never imagined. I’m beyond grateful for each of them and the impact they’ve had on my story. ❤️
