We had the good fortune of connecting with Kara Hazen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kara, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
Integrity is the most important value to me. Personally and professionally, integrity fosters trust, consistency, accountability, and a positive reputation. I can trust myself, I can trust others, and I have the confidence behind my work whatever I may be doing.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My adaptability and ability to pivot as an artist and creative are valuable traits. Being open to change and continuously generating new ideas allows me to stay relevant and meet the evolving needs of my audience. This dynamic approach not only fosters a symbiotic relationship with my customers but also helps me create designs and products that are truly valuable to them, enhancing my success as an artist in the business world. Understanding your audience’s needs and struggles is indeed crucial for creating meaningful and relevant work.
I want the world to know that my success only looks the way it does because I have failed so many times. I have learned every lesson I could the hard way, but I have gotten back up every time. I get through challenges by going through them, instead of avoiding them. I know invite the discomfort of having to learn something the hard, by messing up because I know on the other side is a better version of me, a better artist, and better business person. I want the world to know I’ve built my success on the backs of so much failure, but without failure, there would be no success at all.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If it was the summer, I would take them to the bay in Long Beach, and after we would walk around retro row and shop. Later that night we would grab some dinner and see a local band play at Alex’s bar. I would take them to the Orange Circle, and incredible old downtown in Orange County, where we would walk through all the antique stores, and eat at gabbys mexican restaurant after. If we had a late night and needed some delicious food the next day, we would absolutely be hitting Pepes in Placentia for some burritos. Then we would go to LA and run around the fabric district, eat some Pho, and head down to Venice to meet my best friend on the beach. Definitely hitting Karaoke at linbrook bowling alley at some point as well!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this to my father. I can not take for granted the fact that everyday of my young life, my dad told me I was capable of doing everything and anything I put my mind to. No matter what my ideas were, he always let me dream and told me I could do it. That belief is now my inner voice and as I work and move through life, I have full confidence in myself.
