We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen Fournier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karen, what inspires you?
Without question, I find my inspiration in the people I get to work with in my career. For example, I have worked with a plethora of artists: painters, sculptors, cloth artists, glass blowers, metalsmiths, and even a yarn artist. Their creativity blows me away! It’s been an honor to watch as I film the brilliance of the process unfolding before me. It’s a combination of knowledge and skill borne of learning and experience. I am awed by the stunning beauty of what they envision and bring to life. It inspires me to create my own version of beauty as I represent the stories of others through the medium of film. As a video marketer, I get to learn from the many diverse clients I get to work with, from quilters to insurance agents to PTSD experts to holistic healers, nonprofits making an incredible impact in our community, and more. Each day fills me with wonder for their passion and expertise. My natural curiosity helps me to script their educational series or to conduct an interview, which are two ways to show the world who these people are and what each has to offer. I have interviewed over 600 people in my career, uncovering their trials, hope, perseverance, expertise, and passion for what they believe in. I am fortunate that my profession brings such exciting opportunities for my own personal learning and growth as I soak in their stories and knowledge. Getting to know so many fascinating people has filled my heart and soul and has inspired me to make a difference in this world. I am grateful to work with the amazing clients of Starstream Productions, LLC.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am most proud of the fact that I have won six national awards for my video productions, including four Telly Awards and two Davey Awards. These awards mean a lot to me, because they recognize my ability to draw emotion from others through video storytelling. I’m also in great company among other big-name winners, so it’s a great accomplishment.. Also, three years ago, I decided to construct my own filming studio. It has been amazing. My studio has been my haven, and I love it. So many great things happen there! I spent a lot of time creating a fun, warm space that invites folks to kick back, relax, and get productive! Together, my clients and I sit in my uber-cool purple wingbacks and write scripts. Afterwards, we hop over to the filming area with the teleprompter and knock out the material in no time. I take it from there with editing and finessing the final videos. This space virtually eliminates setup time for me, since I can turn on my lights, change backdrops if needed, and take it from there. It’s a far cry from dragging equipment all over town. I soundproofed the room, so outside noises do not interfere with the audio. I control the conditions, and the results are consistently excellent. The studio was a labor of love, and brings me (and others) great joy. There’s a fabulously positive energy when you walk in. You feel relaxed and ready to work. It’s an awesome space that I am proud of, both for its eclectic ambience and for its ability to help me create great results for others! Building this space was one of the best business decisions I have ever made.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If someone was visiting, I would for sure take them to downtown Loveland. There is an amazing vibe down there that is warm and fun, and everywhere you go, there are public art installations. Even the new parking garage in town sports a huge, beautiful, colorful mural. You can also duck into little art galleries dotted throughout the town, visit the Loveland Museum and Gallery, or hang out in eclectic little coffee shops all over. The people, food, and ambience of our town really come together to create an awesome energy.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to recognize the many mentors I’ve had along the way, including the wonderful folks at the Larimer SBDC.
