We had the good fortune of connecting with Kate Norris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kate, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I think eventually a lot of people dream about working for themselves and having the freedom to do what feels right and good for them. In a way, starting a photography business was a way for me to expand my love and passion for photography, but also to connect with people on a deeper level. The COVID-19 pandemic really changed the way society functioned for a while and my goal was to help bring human connection back.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a natural-light lifestyle photographer. What that means is that I do not overly photoshop or bring big studio lighting with me to sessions. I don’t want you to feel pressured to look, or dress, a certain way – I want you to show up as authentically as you can and I will show up to capture and show you the most beautiful parts of you. I connect with my clients on a personal and human level and a lot of that comes from life experience. I’ve worked in healthcare for a long time, and I’ve learned that life is too short to NOT be in the pictures. Moms, I’m lookin’ at you! Being a photographer in Denver, and with a plethora of options, is not easy, but I think what sets me apart is how I connect to each client – from newborns to the grandparents. I’m here for every stage of life.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
To acclimate them to the altitude, I’d spend the first 2 days in Denver – I’d take them to my favorite local spot: Stanley Marketplace. Then we’d visit RiNo and Highlands for my favorite eats – Daughter Thai, Avanti F&B, and Little Man Ice Cream of course! We’d obviously have to make a stop at Denver Photo Collective to get some awesome studio shots in. Then I’d have them explore the rest of the week in the mountains – visiting Vail, Aspen, Breck, and Keystone. On the last day, I’d take them to my alma mater in Fort Collins, and frolic around the CSU campus and Old Town.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I absolutely owe Becky Durigan + the Denver Photo Collective community a shoutout. Not only have they welcomed me with open arms, but they’ve been willing to teach, share, and commiserate on the ups and downs of being a small business owner. I would not be nearly as successful as I am without this crew.
