We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie and Scott Hittelman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie and Scott, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
Scott is from New York. He did some work on and off Broadway in tech theatre as well as lighting and av for some big name musicians. His love for the theatre spills over into his creative set design and custom decor that he comes up with. He loves to think out of the box when brainstorming fun new ideas with clients and colleagues. Katie is from Southern California and brings with her a boho vibe into her floral and decor design. She seems laid back with a calm demeanor which helps keep clients’ stress under control during a big event but deep down she loves her spreadsheets and planners.

What should our readers know about your business?
Event Design by Scott + Katie is obviously a combination of talent by both partners. Scott already had a successful lighting company and Katie had dabbled in entrepreneurship as a wedding planner but also learned the ins and outs of other aspects of the wedding industry working as a venue manager, a catering sales director, and a bridal boutique sales associate. When they married in 2019, they decided to combine their passions to form a complete package for wedding and event design services. Not long after, COVID hit and the event industry came to a standstill. Baby Harper was also born in 2021 so they were a newly married couple, newly partnered in business, with an infant as well as Katie’s other three children, hunkered down at home trying to keep afloat and keep from driving each other crazy. Well somehow they came out the other end of things thriving AND decided to open a brick and mortar floral boutique in cute downtown Berthoud, because they didn’t think they were busy enough! It’s still an ongoing conscious effort to keep a work-life balance when working with your spouse, but they’re so lucky to be each other’s bosses and number one supporters!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Scott used to live in downtown Denver, in the center of everything. When he met Katie he moved to a tiny rural town in northern Colorado, Berthoud. When we yearn for city nightlife (and have a babysitter) we might hit a show at the Denver Center for Performing Arts or a Comedy Show at Comedy Works with a cocktail at The Edge at the Four Seasons, then wander down Larimer Square to window shop and enjoy the bistro lights above. If we have kids in tow, a day in Denver might include a trip to the Denver Art Museum, grub at The Cherry Cricket and wandering around Cherry Creek followed by ice cream at Little Man. If we’re staying close to home, we would enjoy breakfast at Rise Bakery then admire the sculptures at Fickel Park. Next we’d visit some other boutiques like Marley and Moose, The Zero Source, Wishful Living and The Rancher’s Wife. By then we’d be thirsty so we’d grab a beer and maybe a snack from a food truck while we listen to music at City Star Brewing.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We’ve been in the wedding and event industry a long time. Scott opened his lighting decor company in 2007 and Katie has been planning weddings professionally since 2006. We’ve made many industry friendships that we’ve kept to this day. We enjoy running into old friends at networking events, association meetups and ongoing trainings and conferences. Through the years we’ve collectively been involved with NACE, ILEA, Association of Bridal Consultants, Colorado Wedding Association, Estes Park Wedding Association Northern Colorado Wedding Association, Go2Wed and more. Without staying connected with like-minded professionals who understand the stress and the hard work required to make it in our industry, it would be difficult to keep going. We’ve learned so much from other business owners and creatives by being able to attend Catersource, Wedding MBA, The Special Event Conference, Weddingwire World, MIC, and The Association of Bridal Consultants Annual Conference. We understand that having years of experience doesn’t mean everything, We have to foster our working relationships/friendships and always continue to grow and present new innovative ideas in design.
