We had the good fortune of connecting with Drew DeRose and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Drew, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is an important piece of any career, especially mine. Risk is faith—placing your confidence in the unseen with the hope of what it could be in the future. When I was about to graduate college, I was wrapping up my degree in accounting. This was a safe, well-paid career. All the steps had been laid out before me, and the path was clear. Instead, I took a risk and started my video production company. I moved out of my comfort zone entirely, to pursue a career I’m passionate about. Risk involves moving out of your comfort zone, and the greatest growth comes from outside of our comfort zone. Finding ways to take healthy risk can push you, both personally and professionally, to new heights in your work and relationships.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Kairos Media is a video production company that provides start-to-finish video strategy and production for small to medium sized businesses. We currently operate in 2 markets: commercials and weddings. The fact that our company not only offers video production, but strategy as well has set us apart from local competition. We have learned and honed in our craft through hundreds of hours of hard work. In the process of forming this company, I have been forced to learn the art of selling. This resulted in a lot of time spent cold-calling potential clients. This is the less attractive side of being an entrepreneur. But, I have begun to appreciate the grind. It has helped me become a more well-rounded businessperson and friend.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Lawrence, KS. If my friend was visiting I would start by taking them to Clinton Lake to enjoy the beautiful sights. Then, we’d go down to Mass street (the main drag in Lawrence) for a bite to eat, maybe at my favorite pizza place (Papa Keno’s) or something more international like Mad Greek. In the mornings, we’d stop by Muncher’s Bakery for a donut or cinnamon roll. In the evenings we might visit the Plaza in KC for some shopping and dining. On the weekend we’d most likely try to catch a Royals game at the K. We’d hangout with some of my best friends from college, and catch a movie or go out to dinner together. When we’re feeling antsy, we’d head to Rock Chalk park to play basketball or pickle ball. Also, we’d definitely find a time to head out to Eagle Bend for my personal favorite activity, golf!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would never have taken the dive into full-time video production if it weren’t for my wife, Kate. While we were dating in college, I began to consider what a career in video would look like. Kate saw the passion I had for this, and immediately latched onto the idea. When I had doubts and struggled to take the next step, she was always there for me. I credit Kate with often having more faith in me than I did. Her encouragement and support pushes me to create more, work harder, and be the best I can be.
