We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Hathor Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katie, what principle do you value most?
There is one value that I hold most strongly in the pursuit of my artistic career, make the art that moves through me. It’s incredibly important for me that I allow my work to be propelled by my curiosities. If I become distracted by what I think people might want, I lose the vitality that is required to make work with energy, and it’s the energy of a piece that people connect to. They feel something in the work that resonates with something inside themselves and meaning is made. This meaning encapsulates the profound beauty and connective quality of art. It is what guides my practice.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m interested in the human experience and what it feels like to be fully alive. My art reflects my personal emotional process while also connecting to something greater, a collective experience by being willing to ask questions of myself and the world for which I don’t have answers and exist in the uncertainty of not knowing. With each project, I practice taking risks and holding loosely to the outcome for the sake of making something new. This has been such a powerful exercise to practice for life.
I find that the more I practice taking risks in art, the more willing I am to fail, get things wrong, and look like a fool in life in the pursuit of experiencing the most beautiful life I can imagine. It is not easy to live with an open heart, but art is the tool that teaches me transparency and acceptance for myself and others.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
On her first night, we’d go for a stroll on Pearl Street in the evening and then dinner and drinks at The Kitchen. The next morning we’d do a little tour of thrift shops like Common Threads and Apocalypse, acai bowls at Vitality Bowls, and a late afternoon hike up Mt. Sanitas. The next few days we’d spend in the mountains, using my little cabin as a homebase to explore RMNP and Nederland. Finally, a day or two exploring Denver including the Art District on Santa Fe, Meow Wolf, and maybe a show at Red Rocks if we’re lucky.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I feel vastly grateful for every experience and connection, every laugh, every heartache… but as I look forward to the future and to whom my intention and energy flow, I see my three children. They are pillars of inspiration and joy for me without whom I would not be me at all. I am deeply blessed to know them.
