We had the good fortune of connecting with Katy Foster and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Katy, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks is something that my parents really taught me and my siblings. My Dad’s an entrepreneur but took the leap to quit corporate America when I was in high school. Seeing that at a young age shows you how beneficial making choices for your own happiness and for your family can be. I truly believe if you’re not happy, it’s only your responsibility to take the risk and make a change.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Stir Cooking School is a recreational cooking school open to the public. It’s been open for 10 years in the LoHi neighborhood of Denver. We offer fun filled classes that anyone can sign up for from Date Night classes to International classes, baking classes and even cocktail making classes.
Getting where I am today really comes from believing in others. Yes opening and working tons of hours building Stir’s brand was difficult and there are still days now are challenging, especially 2020. But I’ve learned that putting your trust in your staff that really believe in the brand is so incredibly important. We’ve all had employees who have been disappointing but it’s equally as important to recognize the ones that are rockstars. Trust your people!
I’d like the world to know that cooking should be above all FUN! And giving yourself the ability to enjoy it and not view it as a chore, is so important. Food and eating brings people together!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend visit Denver I’d definitely take them to Union Station for the farmers market, seeing the gorgeous renovation of the train station as well as eat at Tavernetta. We’d walk over to the alley way behind Milk Market and make our way over to RiNo to see all the street art. I also love exploring Colfax and some of the dive bars like PS Lounge and eating at QHouse or Bastiens. We’d definitely see a concert at Red Rocks and take a hike. If it was winter, we’d ice skate in Evergreen.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely my parents, without their support and encouraging me to move from Texas to Denver, I would have never opened Stir! Thank you!
