We had the good fortune of connecting with L. Alexandra and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi L., can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Honestly, I was kind of bamboozled into it. I had been doing freelance editing intermittently for a while, but quietly tended a passion for divination via tarot and astrology for years. One day, a friend posted that he was looking for someone to work a gig at the bar he DJed at. I commented saying that I wasn’t good enough but wished I could. He never replied but a few days later I got a text message from an unknown number saying my friend had referred me. Again I tried to self-sabotage and told him I wasn’t good enough, but when he told me that he would pay me just to show up and I could keep anything I made it was difficult to refuse. So that Halloween I got my start. Even with the lowest prices I have ever given that was still one of my best nights but I read for over 12 hours straight. After that I was hooked and slowly started to build until I was doing parties and had regular shifts at shops as well as digital clients. So ultimately, my thought process was flying by the seat of my pants initially but then slowly refining. There’s definitely been a learning curve.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It’s difficult to say what sets me apart from other readers, because honestly we are all so different. I go to see other readers from time to time and I’m friends with many of them. In the spiritual community, part of the beauty is the multiplicity of individuals, practices and methodologies. From how we set our reading spaces, do our cleansings, and greet our clients, to how we interpret the cards and stars, it’s all magnificently unique. For me, my focus is on intuitive translation of these occult symbols and studies. I blend traditional knowledge and historical research with following my intuition to what is most important in any given moment. I pride myself on my ability to code switch and adjust my communication approach, using my background in the rhetoric field, to try and meet clients where they’re at. My goal each session is to not just tell them how things are or what is going to happen, but to collaborate with them to create actionable steps forward to meet their needs. I personally don’t find it very helpful to just dictate to them but would much rather have them be involved in the process, asking questions, challenging statements, and ultimately finding their way forward. My focus is on co-creation within the reading process in order to guide them back to their own agency and sovereignty in this life. Even with the worst news comes a next step, and it’s my hope that I can help them find it and regain the courage and confidence to take it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely go to Mercury Cafe. In addition to being a staple of the community, they have food I can actually eat despite all of my sensitivities, endless arrays of entertainment, other great tarot readers, and the Astrology Podcast records there every month! Another hidden gem is the Belmar Park. You can often find me wandering there with friends. It’s a hidden gem off of Wadsworth and you’d never know it was there from the road but it’s actually not only a historic district where old Lakewood buildings were relocated, but a bird sanctuary. Finally, I would definitely disappear into the mountains with people. The Arapahoe Forest is one of my favorites and you pretty much can’t go wrong anywhere in it.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Like many, I feel overwhelmed reflecting on all of the people who have helped me in my life. When it comes to this particular career path, Skyler (aka f-ether) was the one who pushed me to start. The Middleman Bar was also my first home as a reader and I have many fond memories there and deep gratitude for Jared having me back so many times. Of course, I wouldn’t have been able to grow my business without the support of my parents and especially my mom, Roxanne, who has always held me up and helped me follow my path even when she doesn’t understand it. My best friend, Michael has been essential in my spiritual development and as a companion on this journey, and one who never let me give up. Last year my friend Ky Gabriel also introduced me to the For Heaven’s Sake family and I’ve been a reader there ever since. Honestly, I could go on and on in this section. From friends, to clients, to teachers there’s been no shortage of aid in my life. With deep gratitude I hope I can continue to pay it forward. Finally, I do want to give one last shout out to tarot.com, which inspired me as child and got me interested in the art at 11.
