We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Fassio and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I love risks! I think they are essential for not only growing your business, but as a person. The risks I’ve taken have only furthered my career even if it didn’t look like it at the time. I moved to Los Angeles from Oklahoma City to pursue my fitness career and had amazing opportunities. I’ve put myself out there and have been vulnerable with personal traumas in hopes to be an inspiration to others, which is risky and scary. And now, from that, I’ve been able to shift my brand in a much larger capacity. Risk is everything and vitally important to grow as a brand.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As of now, I help women find the strength to leave toxic situations (work, relationships, and food) to heal mentally and physically. I haven’t always done this, but it has transitioned to this from my own personal experience. I started my health and fitness career by doing a fitness competition which led to me helping other women workout and with their nutrition – aka a personal trainer. But, I’ve always known I am capable of so much more and I have a bigger life purpose. I went through a lot of trauma in my 20’s (getting married, mom committing suicide, getting divorced, losing career job, starting my business and brand) all in a span of two years. I then fell into a toxic, abusive relationship for 2.5 years that did a lot of emotional damage to me.I had to take time to heal all of that for myself. Now, I get to inspire women to start their healing journeys so they can become aware of a toxic situation or toxic behaviors they may be engaging in and break free. I’ve only gotten to where I am by being authentic, having a passion to help people, staying as consistent as possible, taking risks, and being relatable! I had to learn to love myself so I can show others how to do the same.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is easy because I just did this, ha! I would go eat at Elfive or My neighbor felix for dinner. Next, we would go for breakfast at The Urban Egg then go to Garden of the Gods to explore the beautiful scenery. We would check in at the Broadmoor hotel for a fabulous stay and experience. We would wake up and do the manitou incline and explore Manitou Springs. Lastly, I would show them around Denver and all the amazing little pockets outside of downtown it has to offer. There is endless things to do here! It never gets old!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have a small group of quality friends I want to thank. I keep my circle tight and I’ve lived in four different states and I can say I have a solid handful of friends in each state that support me, lift me, and push me to my growth edge. I would not be where I am without my Granny who has always been there for me in every way. Another huge mentor for me was my therapist I saw in California for a year intensively. She opened my eyes to my trauma healing and I am forever grateful she introduced the self care practices I still do today. Lastly, my top three book recommendations that changed my life are: How To Do The Work by Dr. Nicole Lepera, Guilt, shame, and anxiety by Peter Breggin, and The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer. All of these people and books have played an integral part in my healing and growing process which makes me more emotionally equipped to show up in my relationships and business.
