Meet Kayla Trujillo | Event Designer & Planner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Trujillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayla, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The primary thought process behind starting my own business was finding the cross-section between what I am passionate about, naturally skilled in and something that had value to others in the world. I spend years at a job I was good at but found very little fulfillment in – once I saw an opening for myself I thought “I will always regret if I don’t take this opportunity.” Upon creation, I reflected back on how I have navigated my life and the roles I have played in my interpersonal relationships and realized it all led to the business I am in now.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think the balance between being a creative and a type A organized individual is the true art of this profession. I am constantly in a tug-of-war within my brain – what is feasible vs. the crazy out of this world ideas that come into my mind, walking the line of pleasing my client vs. drawing realistic boundaries. This position requires the art of finesse.
What sets me apart from others is the attention I have to my craft but always the warmness I show to my clients and their event guests. I have an innate awareness of what to provide in an experience to make people feel special. I think I set myself apart because the skills required come naturally so I feel a sense of contentment whenever I am working.
I got to where I am professionally by simply wanting to be successful in my profession and doing whatever it took to get here. I did not expect to start at the top, I took the jobs no one else wanted, I worked as a server to understand the catering/back of house business, I educated myself in how to run a small business, I did things other people did not want to do and kept pushing when it got uncomfortable. I also learned to pivot and be adaptable when an obstacle out of my control has come across my journey. I believe I will stay successful because my dedication to lifelong learning and my strong belief in this being where I belong.
I want the world to know that my brand is that it will always be over the top. If you are looking for something bashful, we are not the brand for you and we accept that. We are wanting to offer something special.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The itinerary would start with brunch at Kini’s. Then we would go up to Red Feather Lakes for an overnight camping trip. When we got back we would hit lunch at Jax and walk over to cruise room after for a drink or two. The next day we would wake up, grab a bagel at Moe’s and go hangout at Wash Park to eat. We would then take a day trip rafting in Idaho Springs.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout the book Big Magic that taught me that ideas want to exist in the world and they come to people for development. If you don’t bring an idea to fruition it will move on to the next person who will take action – I want to be the person who takes action.
I would also like to shoutout my friend Nari, a friend and fellow female entrepreneur who called out my skills, encouraged me to pursue my business and continues to support me personally and professionally.
