We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayleigh Dowgin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kayleigh, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have wanted to start my own business for as long as I can remember but never pulled the trigger. After having my second child, it was time for me to get back out into the workforce. After each application, I would just be overcome with dread of getting another job that was just helping someone else succeed with THEIR business. While I love helping others, I realized I needed to start my own venture not matter how small. With help from family and friends, I decided to sell the scones I had been baking since the start of the pandemic.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Some may not consider baking an art, but a lot of creativity goes into my scones. I am constantly thinking of new recipes and ways to expand my brand. I am still in the beginning stages and am wrapping up my first farmer’s market season. It has been challenging, mostly because I have two small children. Finding the time and money to spare is difficult but it is rewarding when I have satisfied, returning customers. I have found creative ways to maximize my time and have streamlined my baking processes. I would want people to know that I want my scones to be the best you have ever tasted. The phrase I love to hear the most is “I didn’t know I even liked scones!”
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would spend a lot of time outdoors. A drive up the Poudre Canyon, maybe a little rafting trip and lunch at the Mishawaka are always great activities. We like to sample beers at local breweries on a nice day and hang on the patio or find happy hours at restaurants in Old Town. Jax Fishouse or Rare are always great for dinner, Choice City Butcher or Elevated Sandwiches are great for lunch and Lucile’s for breakfast. Since we have small kids, we go to a lot of playgrounds and parks, the farm at Lee Martinez, and throw rocks in the river.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my girls. I think being challenged as a new mom has made me realize that I can push myself past my previous limits. My husband also deserves some credit for all of his support and encouragement throughout this endeavor
