We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelli McKandless and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelli, what do you attribute your success to?
Communication is the best way to gain respect from others and make people feel they are appreciated. I feel that I usually over communicate start times, expectations, what to bring, and I always have a list of FAQ’s. If you are getting the same question from customers over and over, then you have failed as a leader to answer those questions clearly.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We gutted our horse barn in Fall of 2019 and opened the Golf Barn Parker in March 2020. They pandemic shut us down for about 2 months, but we had a great fall of 2020 and I have been full all of the 2021 off-season. My goals when we opened the indoor golf facility was primarily for my teaching business and for my students to have an indoor practice facility during the snowy months in Colorado.

I think a business is always a challenge to manage a balance of professional and personal life. I got to where I am today due to my authenticity, my relationship building abilities, and treating people how I would like to be treated as a customer.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my BF to some of the beautiful State Parks that we have here in Colorado. I love to hike and see all Colorado has to offer. I love being outdoors and feeling the sun on my skin. Breckenridge Brewery has a great atmosphere and so does the Blue Moon Brewery. Machete Tequila and Tacos is a must for out of town guests.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It’s hard to name just one. Audrey Lam, my wife and CFO for Oakwood Homes, is always my biggest cheerleader and realist. She supports my dreams no matter how big or silly, as long as they are financially smart.

My parents are high on the list as well. They have pushed me to alway want more and dream big. They never said “you can’t do that.” They always asked “how do you think you can tackle that?” or “what are your next steps?”

I have been fortunate to have some golf instructors lead me to better answers and solutions. To name a few — Amy Fox of Mansfeld, TX, Joey Anders of Dallas, TX, and Ed Oldham of Westminster, CO.
