We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyler, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Most people outside of my industry are unaware how important it is to know what insurance coverages you have. Almost everyone is looking for the least expensive insurance policy they can obtain, when in fact, you should look for the most value in what you are getting. For example, if you are paying an extremely low rate, but you have the state minimum in liability coverage on your Auto Policy, you are leaving yourself open to high risk of liability if you cause an accident. Instead, look for a higher liability quote and compare companies at that level. If your Insurance Agent isn’t trying to educate you on that, they are doing you a disservice.

What should our readers know about your business?
My business is an Insurance Company first and foremost. We offer Home, Auto, Business and Life Insurance primarily. What sets my agency apart from others, is that we try to educate and make our customer’s feel as comfortable as possible when walking through the insuring process. By the time they leave, our goal is that they are walking out with 100% confidence in what insurance policies they have bound with us.

I got to the position I am in today with hard-work and a lot of risk taking. It was not an easy process. After graduating college, I had a management job, that made good money, but didn’t have that spark of working for myself that I was accustomed to. I found this agency opportunity and applied for the agency, got licensed in a very fast amount of time and went to work. I started my agency at 0 clients $0 coming in the door. I worked 80-90 hours a week for the first 3 years getting as much traction as I could. Eventually, that success was realized, but the grind never stops when you run a business.

Along the way I learned a lot of lessons, especially in the industry my business is in. The first and one of the most important lessons is to throw that old adage “the customer is always right” out the window. It may sound harsh at first, but the customer may know what they think they want, but when you do some fact finding and digging, most of the time you will find a better match and life long customer, just by getting to know them and steering them in a correct and better decision. Another lesson I learned is risk management. Many people see a prospected new client and think they need to obtain them at all costs. I was this way at first, with that growth mentality. A little further down the road, I was able to start to analyze my book and see that there are trends ins desirable business and undesirable business; what risks we should be taking on and what risks we should avoid. A final lesson I learned along the way; goodness reciprocates. If you exude goodness and are charitable, especially within your community, it will come back to you 10 fold. It’s simple, support your community and they will support you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you’re coming to the are to visit, try not to make a set “time” itinerary. Of course there are things that need scheduled like dinner, or the amusement park. But, there is a reason that they say we live on “mountain time” out here. If you have some hikes planned, give yourself time to enjoy them. If you plan a day at the slopes, go as long as you find enjoyable. It will make your visit that much more enjoyable and carefree.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe a lot of my success to how I was raised, especially by my father. He has been self employed since before I was born. He is a contractor in the construction industry and taught me that hard work (especially for yourself) always pays off. He started me off young with this concept, having me work in his field for him since I was 14. I also owe a lot of gratitude to my father in law, who is an office for Alpine Bank. He taught me a few key points to focus on when marketing to our local community, and how impactful and important it is to be involved and support different programs in our community.
