We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelsey Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelsey, what do you attribute your success to?
From a business perspective, I believe in treating each and every person as my most important client. For many of them, it’s the most important day of their lives. And even if this is their one and only makeover, they are my absolute highest priority. From a personal perspective, I believe my success comes from expressing gratitude daily. Through the highs and the lows of being a small business owner, being grateful for my business and my talent keeps me grounded and reminds me of the impact I have on clients through making them feel beautiful.
What should our readers know about your business?
My love for makeup stems from my love for hair. It all started when I obtained my cosmetology license with a focus on hair from The Aveda Institute in Dallas, Texas. Shortly after, I moved to beautiful Colorado where I have now been for over 7 years and can’t imagine another place to call home. My passion for makeup turned a well-loved hobby into my ultimate career. MAC laid the foundation for me to build this passion into my career. After 6 years of artistry and management for MAC, I felt ready for a new challenge and ventured into my new role as my own beauty boss, creating exclusive makeup looks for everyone from brides, to families, to teaching makeup lessons. Although I love doing all varieties of makeup, wedding makeup has a special place in my heart. I want to always make sure everyone feels taken care of and I am most proud of the impact I can have on others through makeup. We all have things we’re self-conscious about when it comes to our appearance, and I love that I get to harness the transformative power of makeup to reflect the beauty I see in everyone. Now that I’m into my second year of being my own beauty boss, I am so excited to see where my beauty journey continues to take me in life.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m blessed enough to get to travel all over Colorado for my job, so in my spare time I enjoy doing anything more low-key. If my best friend came to town, we’d spend the weekend hot tubbing, catching up on life, maybe taking a trip to the mountains, or a concert at the incredible Red Rocks Amphitheater. We’d definitely have to stop at my favorite restaurant, Machete at Union Station, for guacamole and Chile relleno tacos!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I owe it all to God, my family and everyone who has believed in me along the way. I am inspired by the encouragement I receive from the people in my life and the positivity and gratitude I receive from my clients. My hope is that the love I put into my work is felt by each client, and that their happiness passes on to others to make the world a little brighter.
