We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelsey Simmons and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelsey, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Seeing the smiles on people’s faces as they see how photos I took of them turned out makes me happiest of all. Often, we deal with insecurities that no one but us see. It can be hard to see ourselves as beautiful from an outside perspective when we’re so in our own heads. Taking photos that help people see themselves as gorgeous and raise their confidence and self esteem is one of my biggest motivators for pursuing a career in photography. I swear, there’s no better job in the world!
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
My career as a photographer started when I joined the Army as a photojournalist in 2019. I had no prior experience with photography, but I was eager to learn and improve my skills. I spent five years traveling to different places and capturing the stories of the people in the Army, both on and off duty. I wanted to show the world that they were not just soldiers, but also human beings with dreams, passions, and emotions.
I think what sets me apart from others is my ability to connect with my subjects and portray them in an authentic and respectful way. It was not easy to get to where I am today professionally. I faced many obstacles and difficulties along the way. Some of them were related to the nature of my job, such as working in dangerous and unpredictable environments, and coping with stress and trauma. Some of them were related to my personal life, such as balancing my work and family, overcoming self-doubt and criticism, and finding my own voice and style. I overcame these challenges by relying on my mentors, colleagues, friends, and family who supported me and encouraged me. I also learned from my mistakes and failures and used them as opportunities to grow and improve. Some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way are: – Be curious and open-minded. Always seek new perspectives and experiences. – Be humble and respectful. Always listen and learn from others. – Be passionate and persistent. Always follow your vision and goals. – Be honest and ethical. Always act with integrity and responsibility.
I want the world to know that I am a photographer who loves telling stories through images. My brand is about creating meaningful and impactful photos that inspire people to think, feel, and act. My story is about overcoming challenges and pursuing my dreams. I hope that my work can make a positive difference in the world and touch the hearts of many people.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I were showing someone a good time in the Colorado Springs area, I would definitely take them to some of my favorite restaurants like Denver Biscuit Company, COATI, Saigon Tapioca, and Black Bear Diner. Some of my other favorite things to do around the city are hanging out at Poor Richard’s Bookstore, driving down Gold Camp Road in the mountains, a walk through Manitou Springs and, of course, visiting Garden of the Gods!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shout out my incredibly supportive husband! Starting an entire business at the same time as the birth of our first child made life extremely busy, but he has always been there to pick up where I needed help. He is my proofreader, my comedian, my partner, and my best friend. Thank you and I love you!
