We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendall Bullock Birth Doula & Educator and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kendall Bullock, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
As a full-time doula and birth educator, I’ve learned that this work isn’t just my job—it’s really a family job. The unpredictability of birth means my schedule impacts my partner, my kids, and even my close friends. Over time, I’ve come to understand balance not as something you achieve and keep, but something you continually work at.

I’m incredibly grateful for the flexibility this work allows. I can schedule appointments around school events, be present for my kids in a way a traditional 9–5 might not allow, and truly design a rhythm that works for our family. That’s a huge gift. But the flip side is real—I’ve left trick-or-treating halfway through, missed family brunches, and been called away in the middle of the night not knowing when I’ll be back. That kind of spontaneity is magical and disruptive. It takes a toll on the people around you.

Over the years, I’ve found more of a groove. It’s still a dance, and I’ve gotten better at setting expectations and building in rest. But I couldn’t do it without the love and support of my husband—who owns his own business and has, more than once, taken the kids to work with him so I can dash to a birth.

I love this work deeply. And even with the unpredictability, I feel lucky that it lets me be present for the vast majority of the moments that really matter. Balance is a family effort in this line of work, and I’m incredibly thankful to my family for riding the waves with me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
This year, I attended my 100th birth—a milestone that still feels a little surreal to say out loud. I remember going to my very first few births and thinking how far off that number felt. And yet, here I am, with 100+ stories, 100+ families, and 100+ beautiful reminders of why I do this work. I’m so proud of that, and I can’t wait to continue serving growing families in Longmont and the surrounding areas.

Getting to where I am now hasn’t always been easy. Birth work can be intense, physically and emotionally. It asks a lot of you. But with every challenge came growth. I learned to set boundaries, to rest without guilt, and to ask for help—especially from the amazing doula community I’m lucky to be part of.

If there’s one thing I want the world to know about me and my work, it’s this: I deeply believe in the power of support. Every family deserves to feel seen, safe, and held during birth—and I’m honored to be part of making that happen.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friends were coming to town, I’d want them to experience all the things that make this area so special—mountains, music, movement, and of course, really good food.

We’d kick things off with a hike up Mount Sanitas in Boulder—a perfect way to shake off travel and soak in those gorgeous views. And we’d definitely spend time exploring the Flatirons—I never get tired of those towering rocks and peaceful trails. They’re such a grounding part of this place.

After some trail time, we’d recharge with a cozy yoga class at Full Circle Yoga in Longmont. It’s one of my favorite studios, and the vibe there is always warm and welcoming.

Coffee breaks are a must, and I’d take them to Cavegirl Coffeehouse in Prospect. The drinks are delicious, the atmosphere is super groovy, and it’s the perfect little spot to catch up and connect.

For dinner one night, we’d head to Flavor of India in Longmont. Their food is always incredible—rich, flavorful, and so satisfying. Total comfort meal vibes.

And of course, we’d wrap up the week with live music. Whether it’s dancing the night away at The Fox Theatre in Boulder or soaking up the epic views and sound at Red Rocks, it’s the kind of experience that stays with you.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to give a huge shoutout to Lisa Waldo, the incredible founder of Balanced Beginnings Doulas, and to my amazing doula sisters. Without Lisa’s vision and leadership, and the support of this team, I truly couldn’t do this work full time.

Being a doula is beautiful and sacred—but it’s also intense and unpredictable. Having a community that understands the highs and lows is everything. We process together, lean on each other, share advice, and learn from one another’s experiences. It’s the kind of support that makes this path sustainable and joyful.

Because of Balanced Beginnings, I never feel alone in birth work. This team makes it possible for me to show up fully for my clients while also staying grounded in my own life. I’m endlessly grateful for the love, wisdom, and strength that flows through this community.
