We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendra Visioli and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kendra, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I’m not sure work/life balance is ever something we feel truly stable in, especially in the creative industry. In any sphere, we are making choices about where the majority of focus lies. Some days the focus goes more towards work, while other days the focus is more fully on life.

And honestly, that is one of the reasons I chose to pursue this career! Being able to have seasons of putting my full attention on raising my family is a gift. Having the capacity to put energy into a work project helps me to feel refueled and productive so that I can go back and serve my family better. I suppose in some ways it’s a cycle like that, more than a balance. It takes a lot of teamwork to make it all possible, and I’m just thankful for the opportunity to do both.

I suppose in some ways it’s a cycle like that, more than a balance. Spending time with my family helps me serve my photography families better, so that I can relate to them and interact on a really personal level. Spending time on my work helps me serve my family more, in terms of income but also my own mental health. It takes a lot of teamwork to make it all possible, and I’m just thankful for the opportunity to do both.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started as a family photographer in Houston, and have since added more and more segments to what I offer – newborns, first year milestones, professional headshots, senior portraits, births, and most recently boudoir photography. Every time someone entrusts their memories to me is an honor!

I personally love watching families grow through the years, and know from experience how precious it is to capture the fleeting seasons of young families. Birth and boudoir are such profound experiences, and I love being able to offer the empowerment that comes with them to my clients. Helping women to see themselves as genuinely beautiful and to be part of building their confidence is life-giving to me! I’m really excited to continue developing those newer segments of my business in the year ahead.

One thing I pride myself on is that I truly seek to offer authenticity and encouragement in my business interactions. Yes, it’s about delivering a product and capturing a memory, but it’s also an opportunity to show kindness and generosity to each person I interact with. Part of my work is about building up those around me and helping them see the value in themselves and the season they’re in.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh, man, I need some ideas for this myself! We relocated from Houston to Denver mid-2020, so we really haven’t gotten out much. Our go-to weekend plans include choosing a family adventure spot with our 4 boys, pretty much any hiking area on the front range. If we’re out without kids we love a stroll on Larimer Square to grab a drink and dinner at Cru or Rioja. I’ve got a soft spot for Avery Brewing, since that was a favorite during our time in Boulder, but there are so many amazing breweries to choose from now!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My original thoughts on career direction were actually education and youth ministry! I worked at Crestview Church in Boulder through college, then First Baptist Church Amarillo. I loved the interaction with families and merging of personal with professional, and have been truly shaped by the ways those communities care for one another. After moving to Houston I realized I wanted a more creative endeavor, and more control over my schedule. My husband was such an encouragement and support while I pursued photography at The Art Institute, and I absolutely wouldn’t be doing any of this without his cheering me on. My success has been the result of friends, family, and community placing their trust in me. Seeing fellow female business owners in this area cheer each other on and choose community over competition has impacted me in big ways too, and I’m lucky to be part of that here!
