We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenna Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kenna, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
The single most important decision that I made after I decided to work for myself was to continuously work hard to learn everything I could about the job that I needed to do. I would start work from the moment after I brushed my teeth, to the end of the night. I was really hungry to learn back then and had major imposter syndrome, so I only felt comfortable talking about the things that I knew. I then started watching digital marketing videos on Udemy and Youtube, learning about social media marketing, SEO and digital strategy. With all my focus on marketing, I ended up manifesting the thing that I wanted most, which was to start a digital marketing agency. I don’t promote working 12+ hours a day, but for the first year of my business, that is what helped me get to where I am now.

What should our readers know about your business?
So since the start of my business, many things have changed, such as, what I view as a successful business. When I first started I was really focused on building a big digital agency and having a team. We were on track for that, but then 2020 happened, we lost our first big client and things sort of fizzled and became stagnant. I then started taking on projects alone, and subcontracting out what I couldn’t complete. This ended up working out better for me, and with less stress of managing a team and a larger operation, I was able to grow my client base and ended up working remotely. I am now considered a part time digital nomad and spent most of 2022 traveling southeast Asia. Now I live in Denver, but plan to spend my winter months traveling to different destinations. To finish off my 2023, I will be heading to Thailand to work remotely and catch some sweet sun while wintertime in Denver comes in full force. I couldn’t ask for a better setup than to live in my favorite city during the summer and also be able to travel the world and work.

What I’ve learned from this is that sometimes when the road you are taking is closed, it is because it wants you to take another one. In the end, I still became the digital marketing professional I am today, I just got to travel to 7 different countries last year because of it. Every failure I have had is a gift. Every door closed is a gift. I know that the energy that I put into my business will always contribute to a win in my book.

I want others to realize that this is all available to them as well. It just takes self-belief and an unwavering dedication to your goal (with room to adjust your goal as you go). I am always available to talk to any people who have been curious or want to get into the digital nomad lifestyle.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend coming to visit me in Denver, the first place we would go, is out to eat. I try to eat vegetarian, so there are a few places that I love to go while I’m in Denver.

1. Watercourse
2. City O City
3. Blue Sushi (they have the best vegan sushi)

Lastly, I would take them to see the beauty of Colorado! There are a few hikes and picturesque places close to Denver that are really worth the hype. We would go to:

1. Maxwell Falls (lower trail) in Evergreen
2. Walk Golden Creek
3. Chautauqua Park in Boulder Colorado
4. Drive up to Lookout Mountain
5. If we are feeling crazy and want to drive: Glenwood Hotsprings

There is really a never-ending assortment of things to do in Denver. If you are looking for a community in any space, you can find it. Here are some random things I would force my friend to do as well:

1. Ecstatic dances on Thursday nights – Rhythm Sanctuary
2. Poetry Open Mic – Mercury Cafe
3. Fun Night Dancing – Beacon

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout to three people in particular that really helped me get to where I am today. Shoutout to Richard Greenley for believing in me when I first started out on my journey and helping sculpt me into the business person I am today. Shoutout Daniel Lynch for teaching me all about lead generation, websites, and SEO. He really helped me see what Digital Marketing can do for businesses. Finally shoutout Matt Bertram for believing in me when I first started, and giving me advice throughout the beginning stages of my business.
