We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success is staying consistent , while also creating goals. As far as the brand goes, I focus on just being true to myself.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art focuses on positivity and the spirituality we all posses inside of us. We all have a story to tell, but its up to us to tell our story. One thing that I feel that may set me apart from other artist is the way I design colors in the faces of my subject matter, along with with how fast I produce new paintings. I paint in oils and tend to use bright colors in my art pieces. I’m always excited when I complete a new piece of art, and if I met my goal by implementing something new that I have learned like adding textures , glazes , or the design itself, then that’s when I’m most excited. I am where I am today, simply by working hard and not being afraid to show my art no matter how good or how bad I felt it was. I had and have a few mentors, that I could go to and ask the questions, I felt that I needed answers to, so I continue my growth as an artist. I would then just paint or draw something everyday. I could just simply be shapes, or a small portrait. It wasn’t easy, but I knew I had to put the work in , because no one could do it for me. I always feel if you put the work in, along with a little patience, you can achieve anything. I always tell myself things don’t happen over night they take time and effort. Having a network of artist friends has been key as well. I have learned a lot by being in the art community. I am currently part of a coop gallery called True North Art gallery in Colorado Springs, that has definitely been a blessing, because I get to show my art in the city on a daily basis. Social media has been a plus, it has allowed me to take people I know and don’t know on my journey as an artist. I have also built a network of artist friends through social media as well. I have artist friends in the western market, illustration and comics as well as the contemporary market. Social media has made see art in a different way and I absorb a lot form that. I want the world to know that I enjoy creating art, I love all types of art and I love sharing knowledge.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend visiting I of course would take them to downtown Colorado Springs to eat. I have no specific restaurant, but it wouldn’t be a common one you could find any where in the country. We have a lot of nice mom and pop places I would like them to see. Garden of the Gods is a must see and Hellen Hunt Falls is another place to see. I love the out doors here in the Springs. Old Colorado is great as a art destination and if time permits we would of course go see the aquarium in Denver and possibly have a meal in the restaurant there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Well first of all , I would like to thank my wife, for having the patience while I am navigating this art world. She has definitely been in my corner. I would also like to thank my mentor and friend Thomas Blackshear, he has helped me develop my skills as an artist. Whenever I had questions about techniques or processes that I wanted to achieve, he has always been there to guide me. I would like to also thank Najee and Seteria Dorsey of Black Art In America ,for being my first art representatives and giving me the platform to showcase and share my art around the world.
