We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Sovik-siemens and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kim, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work life balance has changed a great deal for me over the years. When I used to be in Corporate America they always preached this holy grail of work life balance that never really felt balanced. I used to think if I could just grind away until the work day was done and then go and try and find some joy in my non working hours (and try and separate work from my brain) then that was balance. The evolution of raising a family and starting a business has everything entangled into one. I now realize that balance for me, is all about setting boundaries and prioritizing what matters most. My family is always number one but I have set up a schedule for myself and my business that allows me to be present with my girls when they are home, and be fully immersed in my projects when I need to be. I do struggle with the unanswered texts or emails until the next business day but I have learned that if I do not make myself separate the two, I will burn out and lose out on the joy I have in both my work and my family life. I changed careers to have that joy and a creative outlet so I no longer strive for perfection or absolute separation, rather I strive to make the two work in conjunction to my whole life. I am able to do what I need for myself and my family when needed and I can be available to my clients on off times if it suites my schedule and their needs are being met. It truly allows me to be in more control of my days and in turn my joy in life as a whole.
What should our readers know about your business?
Pretty Up Interiors specializes in home staging as well as interior design. I think one of the things that sets this business apart from others in the industry is that we are very much boutique and have a very personal touch to every project. We are not cranking out loads of projects or stages at a time. Although we are growing and taking on more, my vision is to keep it a small company and scale it to ensure that we are always able to keep that personal touch and maintain the hands-on bespoke approach to each and every project.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I might be one of the worst people to ask this question! I am SUCH a homebody a lot of the time. That being said, I did have a friend visit recently and we went to the salt caves one day in Denver for some detoxing, as well as the Botanic Gardens. We also hit Golden for a hike and lunch and spent some time at Red Rocks because you have to if it is summer in Denver! I do love to be active so I would also suggest hiking the Incline at Manitou Springs or a class at Compass Fitness in Denver. I would also have a delicious breakfast or brunch at Green Collective Eatery and I do love some delicious food from My Neighbor Felix for dinner.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out to my husband for fully supporting such a shift in my career and our lives. He has encouraged me from the beginning and in the moments I have considered giving up, he always pushes me to keep going. I am so grateful for his support and encouragement. I am also grateful to Heather Harrington and Elissa Sungar. They are both dear friends who also took a chance on me very early on when they new I was taking this. new venture on. They have hired me, referred me and continue to do so frequently. Their faith in me has meant far more than they know!
