Meet Knapp’s Nectar | Beekeepers + Bee Products

We had the good fortune of connecting with Knapp’s Nectar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Knapp’s Nectar, how does your business help the community?
From the tropics to the slopes of the Rocky Mountains, bees have proven to be remarkably adaptable and – in the case of the European Honeybee – a crucial piece in the expansion of our agriculture. In fact, honeybees and other pollinators are responsible for one third of the food consumed by humans. Many modern beekeeping operations rely on providing pollination services to America’s monocultures to turn a profit, which has led to a degradation in soil, plant, and honeybee health across the United States. At Knapp’s Nectar, we put the bees before profits. Instead of focusing on what our honeybees can do for us, we rally the community around what humans can do to support them. Our beekeepers have partnered with a variety of local organizations, held dozens of seminars, and reached hundreds about the crucial role pollinators play in our ecosystem. Beyond general education, we have encouraged our customers to act in some very important ways:
• Buy local honey! Buying local honey is a delicious way to help your immediate population of honeybees while financially supporting the hard-working beekeepers who maintain them! Local honey also contains local pollen, which can help treat seasonal allergies. You can find our Knapp’s Nectar honey at our store Knapp Harvest in Eagle, Colorado.
• Lose the chemicals! Pesticides and herbicides can be detrimental to the nervous system of insects, especially when they are visiting hundreds of flowers treated by them. While the exact amount of damage caused by these poisons is unquantifiable, many leaders in the industry site them as one the leading factors of pollinator decline. From mosquito spraying to the neonicotinoid-coated veggie starts purchased at your grocery store, we encourage our fellow pollinator stewards to take a closer look at what chemicals are persisting in their neighborhood.
• Plant more organic flowers! Both Spring and Fall are excellent times to plant wildflower seed that will grow to support all local pollinators. While having a massive green lawn may be appealing to you, it looks like a desert to a honeybee! It is time we start working with our bees and butterflies instead of against them.
• Spread the word! You do not have to be a beekeeper to understand that bees are important to our environment. Sharing your desire to help them with your friends, family, and neighbors will be critical towards gathering the support to protect our pollinators indefinitely.
We encourage our customer base to follow these steps and work with their local communities to become pollinator advocates in their own right! In time, we hope that these teachings will spread to help local ecosystems across the world. The fight to protect our pollinators can first be started in your very own backyard, park, or other public space. Together we can make the world work with the bees instead of against them, just as nature intended.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Our beekeepers take care of 29 hives up and down Eagle Valley. They are kept busy with tasks such as checking on hives, scraping frames, processing honey, separating wax, and wiring frames.
Education is very important to us at Knapp’s Nectar, and it is a daily part of every beekeeper!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
All credit goes to our beekeepers.
