We had the good fortune of connecting with Kurtis Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kurtis, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
Everything keeps going. So always keep going. No matter the speed. Enjoy the slow. Enjoy the fast. Listen. Rest. Drink water. Eat right. Exercise. Be kind. And keep going.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art background started in with family. My work background started in retail. Then I studied Advertising but had been doing design. I have a few family members who are artists so I have always been surrounded by various art communities. Those backgrounds led me to here.

I loved working retail. It teaches you everything. Accountability, sales, inventory management, staffing, real estate, marketing and advertising.

Design always was similar in feel as art but had a distinct purpose for something. Art can be anything it wants to be. Design is more narrowly focused often for clients and other businesses. So I liked that design combined art with business.

So I took those into starting Welp. It sort of combines apparel, design and digital content into one asset. It really has been my creative outlet as well as a source of business. It’s not easy but it is fulfilling.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First I would ask them what they wanted to do. But if they came here where I live in Steamboat Springs i bet we would get a good breakfast then go spend some time outside in the mountains. Maybe a donut in there. In the winter we’d get lunch at Tbar or GPG. But in the evening I’d take them to Sumatera. Hard to find but great food. Then maybe a drink on the way home. I dunno I would have to ask my friend.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to Mom and Dad. Brother and sister. Family. Sunshine. Snow. Loved ones. Musicians. Coffee and donuts.
