We had the good fortune of connecting with La’Donna Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi La’Donna, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
“Live by your own standards” my grandfather used to repeat this phrase to me until he passed. He lived the way he wanted and didn’t worry about what he was supposed to do or what he supposed to be. I chose to adapt that into my life.

Being an artist is a journey built for the beautiful struggle. You see the world different and you can’t help it. You see it as a reflection of yourself and through that lense you’re able to see what life could be. I enjoy encouraging and supporting other’s.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have been painting for a long time. I received a 140pcs Rosen art kit and a Bob Ross VHS from my grandfather for my 8th birthday. There began the journey of my art career. I loved it! I sold my first painting at 15 and knew exactly how I wanted my life to go. I wanted to create paintings that spoke to all the weirdos out there. All the outsiders who came up through the most difficult of circumstances and still found away to make space.

After a series of random odd jobs, misadventures and self-discovery I started teaching with a paint and sip company in 2014. It had been years since I sold any art. I was a debt collector and the opportunity to came for me to teach full-time. I leaped head first; quit my job and followed my passion. I got to teach nearly 8,000 people over a 4 year period. I risked it all and moved from Milwaukee to Denver to follow my passion.

During the pandemic I joined Rocky Mountain Microfinance Institute in April and graduated the program armed with the knowledge and confidence to start my business. I learned how to monetize my artwork and received a microloan to get push my business forward. I officially opened for business July 7, 2020.

Between local displays, markets and my virtual studio BrushBox.Arts is a real life dream come true. Although, it is a lot of work and true sacrifice I wouldn’t trade it for the world. As the business expands and I gain more notoriety I hope to teach again. Currently, I am able to teach up to 25 people. I would love expand to teaching every week.

I want to give a huge thank you to Rocky Mountain Microfinance Institute (RMMFI). Jeff Atkeins of Fluid Coffee Bar for giving me the chance to paint my first mural in Denver [ 17th & Stout ]. Karen Johnson of PaintNite Inc for encouraging my job and seeing the instructor in me that I didn’t. Mutiny Cafe, Wax Trax, Awaken Boutique, Mecco Coffee (Longmont), Whittier Cafe where I’m featured for the month of March. Last but definitely not least Sherrie Lawson of RMMFI who told me that my artwork would be a great business idea.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friend is actually coming to visit and for the first time I know exactly where I want to take them. First, coffee and delicious pastries at Tous les Jours in Westminster the most delicious pastries I’ve ever had. Loveland Pass to work off those yummy treats. Then an immersive experience at the Denver Art Museum and then through RINO/ Five Points for a graffiti filled art walk. Lunch time at Vital Roots and local shopping through the neighborhood. Quick Uber to Engima Bazaar for a show and some great drinks. They even offer specialty drinks for those who choose not to get intoxicated. Feeling a little peckish we’d get some pastelitos there and head to Frozen Matter for vegan ice cream!! If we’re up to it we’d head to The Block Distillery for curated drinks and some people watching.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Sherrie Lawson and all the folks at Rocky Mountain Microfinance Institute who are always so encouraging and uplifting.
