We had the good fortune of connecting with Lance Lucero and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lance, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe in being prepared to minimize risk. I study, I educate myself, and I seek out the proper experiences so that I can push the risk factor to a minimum.

Any kind of creative endeavor is risky. Transforming images and words from my mind into reality has become a common process to me at this point in my life. Nowadays, I’m comfortable with taking risks to make my ideas reality. Risk is part of my life. I don’t let it get to me; I just execute to the best of my abilities, then I learn from the process and evolve.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a filmmaker that shoots on film and a comic book creator. I am the owner and operator of Warehouse 9 Productions, Ltd. (W9).

I have an award winning feature film (shot on film) called HUNTING FOR FISH. I have distribution. I’m just waiting for my representation to get it to land somewhere.

I have many award winning one-reeler (10 to 12 minutes) short films (shot on film). Ranging from the old west to retro cops to 1700s French paranormal hairdressers. All of them are currently in what’s left of the film festival circuit.

Plus, I have a published graphic novel, BOB: NON-UNION PSYCHIC – THE BIG BOOK OF BOB VOL. 1. The current one-reeler that I have completed is the film spin-off titled COIFFEUR EXTRAORDINAIRE – WAITING FOR LEGROS.

What sets me apart from modern filmmakers, or I should say modern video makers, is that I shoot on REAL FILM. I am true to the definition – a filmmaker. There are two different formats, film and video. I know this sounds harsh to modern movie makers, but it’s the truth. The two formats should not be lumped into the same category. I tell my stories on the canvass that is celluloid, just like the filmmakers of old. I pick the proper film stock to capture my image, I load it into a camera, then I expose it to the proper light. I make cinema! It’s sad that I have to make this clear, but when I screen my films, people see the difference between film and video.

I’m proud that I am sticking with the king cinematic format that is real film. After all, if you want to be like the film masters of old, then do like they do and shoot on film. I will not fake it. When you see a W9 production, you are getting exactly what you paid to see, a REAL FILM.

I got where I am today by studying and perfecting my skills. There is always something new to learn and I embrace it. I will not steal an intellectual property that belongs to another person or entity. I have to produce my own ideas and toss it out to the world and see what I can get. As a professional, I have to stand on my own two feet, not ride the coattails of something in existence.

This is not an easy road to travel. Due to the over-saturation of the video invasion, I must try to create the best independent works that I can. I must try to be original. Furthermore, I have to educate modern movie makers and audiences that real film is not dead. It’s a daunting task, but I have to be honest.

Bottom line, what I want audiences to know is that W9 will give them what I hope they are looking for, which is something different and true to form. Meaning, when I say that you are going to watch one of my films, well, that’s exactly what you are going to get. When I say I have an original graphic novel loaded with supplemental materials and access to a free film spin-off film, once again, that’s what you are going to get.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I always have to take into account the altitude! I don’t want to take them to high and get them sick!

There’s still plenty to do, though… A trip to Red Rocks. Or something in the way of a moderate hike in the area of Golden Gate Canyon State Park. There’s Central City and Black Hawk. Maybe even Estes Park.

Oh, there is plenty of food and drink to hit: The legendary Italian eatery Gaetano’s. Or Carmine’s on Penn. How about wine tasting? I’d hit Spero’s Winery, Balistreri Vineyards, or Bonacquisti Wine Company.

Bar hopping? I’d tour south Broadway. Or maybe hit the Golden Moon Speakeasy in Golden. Heck, you can head down the street to the Ace-Hi Tavern. Or just stay in and I can mix a mean drink myself.

The Denver Art Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Denver Zoo, or the Denver Center for Performing Arts are always a hit.

There are countless concert venues as well.

Dang, there’s plenty to do in Colorado!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give a shoutout to my family and my life partner. They believe in what I’m doing. They are helpful and brutally honest. I have a great support system.
