We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Miranda-Norris and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laura, what do you want people to remember about you?
Our time on this beautiful planet is so short. We should enjoy each day and appreciate how precious each life is, no matter how small. At the end of the day, I want to feel like I have done my part in giving back to the earth and not just taking from it. I want to inspire others to take the time to appreciate the beauty that is all around us, because it only takes one person to plant the seed of wonder in our imagination.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Land, Atmosphere, and Marine Assessment was created three years ago. A friend and I wanted to create a business that would express our desire to help the environment and wildlife. I have been an environmental science professor for 10 years. There is nothing more gratifying than being a teacher. Watching people become excited about nature is a wonderful sight. I wanted to reach more people and educate them on caring for the earth, so LAMA was born. We developed a unique, simple-to-use environmental health rating scale. This rating scale can be used by teachers and children to understand how ecosystems are being impacted by pollution and climate change. I’d love for teachers to be able to use our environmental rating scale in their classroom lessons. Our website is full of fascinating interviews with conservation specialists, professors, and dedicated wildlife rehabbers. I have been rehabbing baby wildlife for many years. It’s extremely satisfying to raise a tiny baby cottontail and then release it back into the wild as an adult. LAMAscale enjoys caring for and photographing wildlife, which we share on her website so that others can appreciate the natural world’s beauty. We want people to come to our website and find answers to environmental questions like how the warming climate affects pikas or how to attract honeybees to their garden. We have presented papers at conferences like the 2022 Ocean Science Meeting. Nature Tails Stories from Backyard Wildlife is a series of children’s nature books I’ve written. Nature Tails is a series of colorful children’s books that connect children to nature in order to encourage future generations to get outside and enjoy the wildlife with which they share the planet.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Colorado is a remarkable place to visit, with magical scenery and plenty of places to visit. If you are a nature lover or prefer to spend your time sight-seeing indoors, Denver has both. The Vital Root is sure to please your vegetarian palate. The atmosphere of the restaurant will make you glad that you eat a plant-based diet. If you’re in the mood for a burger and a round of mini golf, the Rino Country Club will make a hole in one. Nightlife is a vital part of Denver’s culture. The Milk Bar has something for everyone’s musical taste, from the retro 80’s to a laid-back Indie sound. Make sure to sleep well because you’ll need to get up early to explore the best of Colorado’s wild side. Cherry Creek State Park is the place to be for the unique sounds of the prairie dog community. You camp over night and enjoy a day on the lake. You can’t leave Colorado without seeing a portion of the 400 square miles of Rocky Mountain State Park. At the entrance, you will be greeted by beautiful mountain peaks, amazing hiking trails, and clean air.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to thank my father, who taught me to be curious about the natural world. Children are naturally inquisitive about their surroundings, and I was no different. My father saw the love I had for nature and all the unusual creatures that call it home. He explained how all ecosystems are intertwined and how removing one species would cause the entire system to collapse. I learned from him how to respect and care for the planet so all species can thrive.
