We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Tamarah Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura Tamarah, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I was inspired by my own experience as an immigrant. I moved from the Dominican Republic to the U.S. in 2005 at the age of 13, during which I experienced racism for the first time. The experience is humbling to this day and soon after arriving to the US I realized that I wanted to dedicate my career to helping other immigrants know their rights and feel supported and welcomed. After starting law school I learned about immigration law and how I could achieve my goals of wanting to give back to my fellow immigrants by becoming an immigration attorney, and I never looked back.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am most excited about the growth we have already achieved at Latam Law, LLC, and the bright future ahead of us. After being an associate attorney for my entire legal career, I realized that in order to work in an environment where me and others felt valued and appreciated and I would have to create that environment myself. Taking the step to opening my own firm was not easy as I would be leaving reliable income and would have to learn how to run a business. I overcame the challenges by trusting and relying on those who offered to help me, understanding that it’s okay to start over, and staying humble and open to learning. I want the world to know that I have not accomplished anything alone, and as a female immigrant myself it was not easy to get here and I still face challenges and discrimination to this day, however, it’s important to believe in yourself and rely on your community even when you are scared.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the area I would show them a little but of the city and the mountains. We would go eat at D Bar or Piper Inn, and then head to Estes Park to my favorite restaurant, The View Restaurant, and visit the Stanley Hotel. Living in Denver, the most interesting thing is that you can be in the city one moment and quickly get to the mountains and feel that you are far away.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have a group of people that have been pivotal in helping me succeed. First, my dear mother, Dr. Tamarah Rodriguez, who has encouraged me to be an independent, dedicated, and resilient woman my entire life. My siblings, who have cheered me on throughout my life and career as well. Last but certainly not least, my staff, who believed in my ability to start my own law firm before I even believed in myself and have gone above and beyond to help me succeed by providing invaluable support as we grow the business.
