We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Ferrara and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
We watch documentaries and read biographies about people we don’t know, politicians, athletes, celebrities, the list goes on. I think we all crave knowing more about the people close to us, yet so often we’re afraid to ask the right questions, and eventually it becomes too late. Enter Why Wait Stories a documentary production company for families!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m obsessed with what I do. I get to sit down and chat with the most amazing people who’ve led such interesting and extraordinary lives. I capture and preserve their stories for their families to enjoy now, later & for generations.

Until I started this dream business, I was a local news anchor and reporter in West Texas, Las Vegas, Nashville & Colorado. That last stop is where we planted roots and decided to stay, raising our girls in the shadow of Pikes Peak.

My superpower is that people tell me everything, and I mean everything! Just ask pretty much anyone involved in OJ Simpson’s armed robbery case in Vegas! Back in West Texas, where my station covered a lot of ground, I was typically the one entrusted with hitting the road for hours, having just 30 minutes to find and interview that one person who could share the heart of the story, and make it back in time for my 6 p.m. deadline. I’ve gotten to interview legendary athletes & country music icons. I’ve knocked on doors on the toughest day of some people’s lives, held their hands, cried with them and always tried to be the kind of reporter I hoped would knock on my door if I were in their shoes.

When my dad died 5 years ago, I called a news photographer and asked him to grab his camera and set up shop in a corner of the Irish bar where we celebrated his life. Dozens of people sat down and told story after story, some hilarious, others touching, and more than a few that were wildly inappropriate (those tend to be the best). I didn’t know it then, but that was the beginning of Why Wait Stories… and I know “JJ” would be pretty damn proud.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In Colorado Springs, start your day at Story Coffee, the cutest little tiny house coffee shop where the baristas treat you like family (some even babysit my girls!). Then, we hit the Manitou Incline, lunch at Homa (boutique hotel, Kinship Landing’s new restaurant), then happy hour at White Pie!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Oh my gosh, I have so many amazing people in my life who have pushed me in the right direction, most importantly my late father who inspired Why Wait Stories. I would give a kidney to go back and interview him and create a documentary about him and his amazing life and I feel his presence when I’m creating these films for other families.
