We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauryn Ritchie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauryn, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
I have this quote I say all the time, “Make tomorrow you proud”. It basically reminds me to do what I *really* need to be doing. Whether that’s working on an edit or a script or sewing costumes so I can have them done on time, or whether it’s taking an afternoon off to watch a movie so I can be more recharged for tomorrow. I live every day thinking about what me-of-the-future needs me to be working on to set her up for success.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Early in my career, I did a couple horror movie trailer parodies and could feel my passion come alive while working on them, so I decided I wanted to spend more time doing high production videos instead of pumping videos out as fast as possible. In the last year, I made 2 award-winning short films and I have two more shorts in the works right now! My favorite thing I’ve done so far has definitely been the Rebel series, which is a Star-Wars inspired short film complete with extravagant costumes and light sabers! We got to shoot in the Great Sand Dunes and Rocky Mountain National Park and the first installment won 2nd Place Audience Choice at Sabercomp 2020 and Best Drama Short at Front Range Film Festival 2021. I was Rebel’s Director, Producer, Chief Editor, SFX Supervisor, Actor, and much more.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take them to Old Town to walk around and see all the cool, local hangouts. My favorites are the Welsh Rabit, Social, and Mary’s Mountain Cookies. You can’t visit Northern Colorado without hitting those spots up! I’d also take them up to Horsetooth, that is my favorite local place to just park and watch the sunset over the reservoir, or work on some writing.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely have to shout out my sister, Devynn Ritchie. She is an incredibly talented filmmaker and is right beside me on every project I work on. None of my films would have gone as smooth or looked as good without her as my Executive Producer, Assistant Director, and much more!
I also want to shout out all of my professors who took me under their wing during my undergrad and acted as a mentor to me, especially Matt Gohl.
Lastly, I want to shout out to everyone who worked on my latest film, Dissension. We had an absolutely amazing cast & crew who killed it in every way and had us wrapping almost 2 hours early every day! They are incredibly talented. Shoutout to Allie Ruckman, Kaitlin Kennedy, Jake Riffel, Zara Allen, Graham Mackey, Alex Prast, Devynn Ritchie, and Ryan Crist!
