We had the good fortune of connecting with Lena Gill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lena, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
Ultimately, the goal is to run my own wedding venue! Learning the ins and outs of the entire wedding business has been so rewarding, but the creativity side of it – like photography and videography, has really kept my soul grounded. I have this vision for the most aesthetically pleasing venue Colorado has ever seen!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I like to describe myself as the visionary narrator. My job is to put into images the story that’s in front of me. While a large part of my business is love stories, I also do commercial work and find storytelling is equally important within that realm also. I started like most photographers, with a camera and a hobby. I dedicated all my time to learning, higher education, conferences and networking. After about 6 years, I received the title of Adjunct Professor at the community college, and I teach photography and graphic design at the collegiate and high school level – all while running my business full time. Some days, I think I’m crazy for trying to do it all at once, but being able to please my clients and then telling my students about it is so rewarding. They are so excited to get into the field, and it’s amazing to watch these kids grow into young creators.
Throughout my years, I’ve really learned to fail forward. It’s a hard lesson to learn, but with growth and success comes frustration and curveballs. When you experience a fail, get ahead of it, and move forward.
My brand is client focused. While some photographers really have that niche, I think what sets me apart is that I really consider myself the all-around, go everywhere, do anything content creator. I’ll film while snowboarding, climb mountains at sunrise, spend a classy day at a five star venue or film a quiet day in the backyard. My documentary style shooting is classic and timeless, perfect for just about anything.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I‘m a native to Colorado Springs, but I know the state pretty darn well at this point. During the winter, the must-do is snowboarding at Keystone. It’s a tradition to take friends riding during their visit.
The rest of the week, you can probably catch us at some type of brewery across town, and of course a visit to the Human Bean – our favorite coffee spot!
Of course, can’t skip Manitou – which is where I grew up (West-Side!). We always make a stop at the penny arcade, then Crystal Park Cantina or the Loop for margs after.
During the summer, I spend most of the time outside. So a quick trip to Pueblo, for a boating day, or a paddle board day near Tarryall is always a hit.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband has really pushed me to start- and continue, creating and exploring my artistic side. He bought my first camera in 2014, really starting it all!
