We had the good fortune of connecting with Lia Colette and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lia, how do you think about risk?
Risks are necessary, but scary as ever. I probably took the biggest risk of my life around this time last year. I decided to leave a career that was financially secure. My salary was going to double, I was going to climb a ladder of success, that I thought I always wanted. And I gave it all up because I was miserable. You hear and read stories about how people leave their corporate lives all of the time because they were unhappy or unfulfilled. You never really picture yourself in those scenarios of walking away from stability and financial security until you really tap into yourself, and your mind, your body, your soul. I couldn’t believe myself. I took the risk of continuing a well established career to make my soul happy. As much as I’ve struggled, and gone back and forth about returning or seeking out similar career paths, I know for a fact that I would not go back. I feel it in my core, that I actually made the right decision. Taking that risk was not easy, and the path that came after that risk was more rough that I could imagine, but I decided to seek out a life that I wanted for myself. I decided to take a chance on me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The best way to describe my craft? I am a clown that laughs at her own jokes and am lucky that people laugh along with me. I was gifted the nickname “Character” in college and that truly sums it up. I am a character, and if you know me personally, you know! I am just recently sharing it with the world as a content creator. I can’t believe I am making strangers laugh. I’m the friend that’s not afraid to dance battle someone in the club. I’m the friend that makes a joke in the group chat to lighten up the tension. That has always been me, in any capacity or space that I am in. I’m on this road of content creation, and I’m literally putting myself as I am, in front of the camera. At first, when I thought I wanted to take social media seriously, I was putting on a facade and not understanding what my actual niche was. I honestly still don’t know what my niche is, I just know who I am. I know how I want to show up on your timeline or your ‘for you’ page or to various brands. I know that no matter what, I want to be the same, goofy girl from Brooklyn who loves to milly rock and WILL milly rock, on any and every block. I show up this way as a mom and as a wife. I am always my authentic self, and I think that’s why I have gained a following on social media. I am making people laugh in the way that I can by just being me. Not to mention, there are people who will not find me funny. And I’ve come to terms with it. When I first began making skits, I used to post and think “oh, I need x amount of views and comments, that’s how I’ll know my skit was funny”. Now, I’m thinking more so along the lines of “I want this specific person to laugh, or I know this skit is going to make so and so chuckle”. I stopped focusing on trying to reach the masses, and focused more on individual people, a more selective audience. By shifting my mindset I’ve felt so much better about putting myself out there, I’m focusing more on the craft and not the views. The craft behind my social media skits is what will push my overall career forward.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
All aboard, the first stop we’re making is to Maker’s Alley in Wilmington, DE! We’re going to shimmy on down to the bar and order right off of the happy hour menu, nope, there’s no need to see the regular menu – happy hour has got us covered. As we wait for our drinks, we’re going to skip on down to the table with the jumbo connect four pieces, which you’ll probably beat me in, I have no shame. We’ll eat, drink and laugh for about an hour then we’re off to take a light stroll along the waterfront. Wilmington has such a beautiful view along the waterfront, and it can give both date night vibes or just cute “let’s take more pics over by the deck” vibes with your girls. Once we got our Instagram pics for the night, we’ll head on over to Docklands for some more food and drinks and close the night out there. From start to finish, this is a vibe! Trust me! If you don’t believe me, check out my “Weekend Vibes” reel on my page =).

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My daughters. My daughters have been the most patient little beings on my road to discovery. The joy that they exude no matter how much mommy is stressed or tired or overstimulated, they have always found a way to find the light in everything and I am so blessed that they have chosen me to be their mommy. My husband. If there is one thing this man does is believe in me. All of the crazy ideas or business propositions I’ve pitched to him, he has shown unwavering support. No matter what he has my back and I am forever grateful.
My parents and my girlfriends. I’d be nowhere without them. My biggest cheerleaders and I can’t wait to thank them all when I receive my first BET Award (I’ve been saying this to them for ten plus years now, lol).
